I'd also agree that it is one of the best horror movies ever made. It'd easily get into my top-5.

However, different people have different opinions, which explains why the ratings aren't based on exactly what I think.

I guess the problem a lot of people have with this film is that they don't really understand it on their first viewing. (I'll admit that I didn't.)

It's not really a generic slasher, and *spoilers* the killer is never revealed at the end. It's up to the viewer to piece together the clues, and work out what's going on themselves. If you're expecting the movie to be a more typical slasher, where the killer is revealed and then defeated by a final girl, people are more likely to think the ending sucks.

but that's why it's so great though. mystery and not seeing things and things and people existing in shadow is a lot more effective in scaring people than seeing people and things. using your imagination in what is happening and what things are in horror movies makes a horror movie better, it's a testament to how our imagination comes up with better things than what we can see and know. what we can't see is a lot more scarier than what we can in horror movies.

but the reason why this film works so well is precisely because we can't ever see the killer and there isn't a comforting ending where we can be ok. it leaves it up in the air and it has the most unnerving and disturbing ending in film history; the phone again ringing over and over and over and over...

this film is not going to tie a perfect bow for you, it's not going to tell you everything and that's exactly why it's so compelling and so great because it's so unconventional.

Because it's not particularly gory and has no nudity will probably be the reason. This film is a 10 though.

You may have a point.

I think Black Christmas being such an early slasher meant it came out before a lot of the rules that became commonplace in slashers had been set. So if you watched Black Christmas for the first time expecting it to be like a slasher from the 1980s, you might be disappointed.

Instead of being a fun movie where a bunch of 30-year olds played high school students, that were chased around by a masked killer whilst finding time to get drunk and expose their boobs, Black Christmas was a movie the required more thought. You can't turn your brain off and enjoy it like you can with most slashers. You have to pay attention to small details that are happening during the film, and come to you're own conclusion as to who the killer is.

by the way i just found out by watching eli roth's history of horror show something about something i've always thought about. which is the formula of slasher movies made from the late '70s to right now. i used to think that there is a formula that all directors had to follow to make a slasher movie and that there was no reason for this formula. but i found out by watching this show that the reason why this formula exists is to make money because that's what the movie fans want. also they made different slasher movies in the '90s like scream to offset the tired cliches of countless '80s slasher movie sequels.

but all you said about it are good things in it's favor so it should be rated higher on here based on all you said about it. expectations are one thing but if you are dumb and expecting bad things from a movie then your opinion or wrong thinking a movie is bad based off of your incorrect thoughts are not correct.

even the most jaded, hardened, cynical, and seen it all, burnt out, watched 1000 slasher movies in their lives people all are immensely impacted by this epic and amazing film. so i think even if you have dumb expectations for what a slasher movie should be you have no control over being blown away and impressed by this physically effecting and impactful film.

but gore and nudity are not important for a horror film to have to be good, just look at the texas chainsaw massacre. blood and gore are not required to make a horror movie scary and nudity is not required to make a horror movie good.

7.2 is a pretty good score.

Agreed, HodWatt. I'd say it's in the "great" territory, with 8 being "excellent", and 9 at "masterpiece" for the ages.

BC has no suspense and it feels neutered, like it was made for tv. Technically it's okay, I feel like the main cast should have been switched around. There is a long stretch, 70-80 minutes, where literally nothing happens except girl drama. It's more like a 60's-esque mystery than horror. 7.2 is a gift for this movie.

edit, no idea why my comment below was deleted. I was right and the person admitted it.

horror movies never get high ratings on IMDB. I don't think any are over a 8
