Disappointing

Waited a long time to see this and possibly it's a case of raised expectations but I was disappointed. I like Malcolm McDowell and was hoping for something as good as "if" - but it wasn't to be. It could be that so many of the stronger scenes have been shown as clips elsewhere that when seen in the film they just don't have the impact anymore.
The only thing I can say in it's favour is that it wasn't as violent and nasty as I thought it would be (which is something I didn't want to see and was one of the reasons I took so long to watch it).
Anyway, an OK 6/10 from me and maybe I'll like it better at a later date.

What did you think it was lacking?

Impact. None of the performances, style or dialogues justified the film's reputation - at least for me. But as I said, lots of clips have been shown over the years and very possibly the film has influenced other productions so it no longer stands out as strikingly original. I'll watch it again sometime and quite possibly find I like it better.

I hope you do.

It wasn't a favorite of mine for many years but with my last couple viewings I've grown to like it much more. Something I've found with Kubrick films. The more I watch them, the more I like them.

This is very true. I had to watch Barry Lyndon many times before I understood how freakin' amazing it is. The only movie that has not proven true with is Eyes Wide Shut. But I suspect we don't have Kubrick's final cut of that movie, so that may explain why the movie next clicks with me.

I know what you mean, I too watched it with a raised level of expectation and was disappointed on first viewing. I went back to it at a later date and enjoyed more on a second viewing possibly because of lower expectations. It has gone on to become a movie I quite like.
Do watch it again.

You might want to watch it again with some context in mind. The director Kubrick filmed this in London with a small budget. Out of that measley budget he was able to created high art. Yes, today a lot of it looks dated or silly but man, look at what he did with what he had. Very shortly after this films release we started getting movies like the Godfather, Exorcist but for it's time Kubrick went up against French Connection, Straw Dogs type movies and in this respect the movie holds up exceptionally well.

Um...haven't been able to get past the first 30 minutes of the movie. (Shrugs)

Honestly I think it was a very good movie, but not the type you would sit and watch over again, it was good in the sense that it captured the mind of a psychopath so well. Kubrick’s acting was amazing, so much so that it made me feel disgusted in him, which is exactly what I like from an actor because if you dislike the character it shows how well of a job they did playing it. It shows a social concept of a corrupt government and I personally would recommend it to a crime/ horror lover who loves a conspiracy.

I've yet to watch it a second time - sometimes that's when I start to enjoy a film a bit more.

What role did Kubrick play? I must have missed him. Do you have an alternate cut?
