The Henchmen

Did every villian have at least 3 henchmen? Some have more? I was watching the show today and wondering about the henchmen. Did they recycle them? What did they get paid? Did any of them go on to become well-known actors?

reply

They were starting to skimp in the first season as Frank Gorshin only had two henchmen in the wax factory story set. Yes, there are actors who were henchmen on Batman who went on to greater things. John Crawford who worked for the Bookworm went on to being the mayor in one of the Dirty Harry movies plus was a semi regular on The Walton's as Sheriff Ep Bridges. Joe E Tata was a Riddler henchman who went on to playing a father on Beverly Hills 90210. And there were others.

Most of the time, for the fights, extra henchmen would come out of the woodwork! ;-)

Especially true of the third season. They were pinching pennies pretty hard by that point and probably sourced henchmen through set workers most of whom were Teamsters. Must have been cheaper to go that route than through SAG.

Thanks for the great and helpful responses.

Penguin henchmen also included Harvey Lembeck and Walter Burke, established character actors; and Catwoman henchman Jock Mahoney had a solid past career.

Tata wasn't a father he was the owner of the Peach Pit, the local diner.

Victor French (Highway to Heaven, Little House on the Prairie) was about to mow down Batman and Robin, but Zelda warned them just in time.

Norman Alden was a henchman in The Joker Trumps An Ace and Batman Sets the Pace. He was in Back to the Future and appeared in many television shows. Some of the henchmen were actually stuntmen. Al Wyatt and Gil Perkins appeared all over the place in movies and television shows. Wyatt was the stunt double for Randolph Scott in several westerns. John Dennis was in Louie's Lethal Lilac Time and also appeared in several television shows as well as From Here to Eternity and Conquest of the Planet of the Apes.

In the ep with Green Hornet, two of the henchmen were Alex Rocco, who played Moe Green in The Godfather, and Seymour Cassell, a character actor who has appeared in several of the Wes Anderson films.

reply

Vitto Scotti from "the Godfather" played the Penguin's henchman Matey Dee in "the Penguin's Nest".

hmmm  - Most of the Henchmen never spoke a word - except maybe when Mister Freeze was separated from them in the Arctic Zone of the room, right?

Doesn't King Tut have a couple of famous Henchmen - like Lloyd Haynes of Room 222 fame - and Tim O'Kelly?

Or maybe Tut just kidnaps them or something.

 Mellow Salutations!

I just saw an episode with 2 henchmen and 1 henchwoman. I want to say it was Shame. They made a reference that they were about to fight and only outnumbered them 2.5 or 3.5 to 2. I liked the names of the Henchmen, and how you can actually have time to see the credits at the end and see who the actors playing them were. So often now you have to come here to find out, bc the credits are too fast or small.

The same King Tut episode had Sid Haig as one of his henchmen. Not well known at the time but also was one of the Lawgivers in the Star Trek episode The Return of the Archons. I'd be happy to be on two of the most well known series of the 1960's. Something to tell the grandkids about. Lloyd Haynes also appeared on Star Trek in the second pilot "Where No Man Has Gone Before" as the communications officer.

I rewatched that episode not too long ago. Was very surprised to see Sid Haig.

You'd think the villains would give their henchmen guns, but no, they figured they could beat a martial arts master like Batman with just their fists, over and over.

reply

Actually, it was union rules. The Villain Henchman's Local 214 said no henchman could carry a gun of any type or a knife longer than 1.5 inches.

seemed like some of the henchmen were moonlighting with multiple villains. hopefully the got paid overtime.

LOL

Some of those henchmen were really tough in this series. Reminded me of some of the James Bond movies with Jaws and Odd Job

reply

The toughest henchmen were the ones with their names on their t-shirts.
