Marathon

Is anyone here getting ready for the New Year's marathon?

reply

Hello, all!

I will be around, off and on.

reply

Here we go!

reply

Not sure I remember this one, what a treat to see it "new"!

reply

This episode does a good job of showing the difference between harmless nostalgia and being a miserable misanthrope trapped in the past.

reply

Now Buddy Ebsen!

It hasn't begun here yet (I'm in Arizona), but I've never had the negative feelings toward this character that others seem to have. The older I get, the more I'm able to empathize with him.

Update: Now that "Static" has begun here, I decided to do a search for the radio call letters WPDA referenced in the episode, and I found this: http://tenwatts.blogspot.com/2006/02/radio-on-twilight-zone.html

I've not had cable for several years now, but I'm glad to hear Syfy is still having those marathons. Back when I was a kid, it was their annual marathon where I saw the series for the first time. I was hooked instantly, barely got any sleep, and had the VCR recording nonstop (I can still remember how snowy it was the night when I first started watching).

I've got the boxset ripped onto my PC nowadays, ready to stream to every room whenever I want, but I still got that stack of tapes that I recorded from the Syfy channel haha. I doubt I'll ever get rid of them.

Hopefully, a whole new generation learns about the show this way too.

reply

Yes, nothing like the first times you see these. That's why I've resisted buying the dvd's. I just like to watch it in tv, plus every year there's one episode I haven't seen yet. Too bad they're edited though.

reply

It started for me in New York ..kinda not the same without snacks since I'm a diet...but it's still fun

reply

Hi there. Are you in the City?

reply

Hello..I'm in upstate. Rochester.

reply

I'm in Manhattan.
Wonder why Cliff Robertson is wearing a top hat?

reply

Oo the big city..and I wonder the same.

reply

I like Cliff Robertson-- just not so much in this one.
BTW- Isn't the dessert in the "Rip Van Winkle Caper" the same exact site as in "A Hundred Yards over the Rim"?

reply

I actually didn't know the actors name...but I spotted Gomez Adams

reply

John Astin!

reply

yes!

reply

oh that clip they just showed before commercial break is one of my faves

reply

I do like the commercials for the marathon!

But I'm getting tired and have to go to bed now. Good nite!

reply

Good Night.

reply

Good night, Jenny -- don't sleep for 100 years!

reply

Zzzzzzzzzz.................

reply

goodnight!

Wonder why Cliff Robertson is wearing a top hat

The hat was Robertson's idea. He did research on the period and found that it was the type of hat that "might have been worn by an Easterner on his way west" (Zicree, 2018, p. 183).

reply

oh wow thanks for that bit of info Tristan...I was thinking maybe a Chauffeur would wear that hat back then.

reply

Love it! I had wondered the same thing.

reply

Anyone here remember when they had a voting system for the next episode to play on SYFY?

Do you like the channel picking the episodes or did you like the fan vote system better?

reply

Not sure. I like the idea of voting, but it always ended up with the most obvious winners, like To Serve Man.

I like that episode, but you know what I mean.

The fact that this year SyFy started towards the end of season two and is running through for a while in order means we get a different taste than we usually get. Maybe that's okay?

reply

Yeah it was obvious. i felt the voting system was kind of like a gimmick. I like them deciding the episodes. I think its quite okay they started with the end of season 2.

reply

Yes, if they did it the exact same every year, we'd always miss the same episodes at 330 or whenever we can no longer stay awake.

reply

Exactly Shannon.

reply

I like The Silence. Besides seeing Franchot Tone and Cyril Delevanti, I like the fact that it's one of the few (maybe the only?) TZ episode with no supernatural elements -- just human beings messing up their own lives.

reply

Do you think you could keep silent for 1 whole year?

reply

I am a very quiet person by nature, but no. I talk to myself quite often.

reply

i dont think i could either Tristan.

reply

Probably not. I often whistle softly without even thinking about it -- don't know if that would count in this wager.

reply

The info on my Dish Network Guide on SyFy is episode 171- shadow play(1986)...it is safe to say dish got this wrong yes?

reply

wow those steaks look good...even in Black n White

reply

Too bad -- now it's a roast!

reply

The Roast didn't look quite as good as the steaks in Black N White...But I'd still enjoy it

reply

I agree, especially if someone else did the cooking and cleanup!

reply

it's always nice when someone does the cooking AND the cleanup. I usually do one or the other. :p

reply

Me, too. If given a choice, I'll take cooking over cleanup, especially if meat is involved.

reply

same piano.

reply

Mind and the Matter - funny montage here. Too many Archibalds!

reply

i googled archibalds and a fast food drive-in in Cali came up on yelp...horrible reviews!

reply

lol

reply

The Obsolete Man -

Poor Burgess Meredith

reply

But he's very noble.

Hate to say it, but I don't think I'll make it through the epi. Going to have to say goodnight until tomorrow.

reply

Goodnight Shannon. When you wake up your fate shall be determined by the State.

reply

well timed. Maybe i'll go hide in a bank vault...

reply

Hide? We will just determine your fate right now...You are hereby sentenced death. Method? you May Choose the method of execution...From this approved list: Gas, or being beat with a metal baseball bat until your last breath is taken.

reply

I'm back after 6+ hours of sleep. Not much I missed, it seems?

reply

Dead Man's Shoes is one I like.

I was watching an episode of Perry Mason a few weeks ago, and it used the jazzy score often used for these noir-ish, gangster TZ episodes.

reply

Yeah, I like the "swinger" vibe of this one.

reply

Love this piano one. Great acting and intriguing premise.

reply

I'm back too...I made it to about 6am then went to bed. Woke up at 2pm

reply

Welcome back. The Little People is a great one to start up with.

reply

Thanks. I liked the person or persons unknown episode better. I was walking on my treadmill during that one.

reply

Both good, in different ways.

My exercise for the day has been cooking/baking.

reply

I usually eat a ton on new years eve. But I am dieting now. I might make a tofu "meatloaf" later. I am not vegetarian but i am trying to not eat meat until my next weigh-in with my dietician.

reply

Good for you. I usually wait until after the New Year's bacchanalia to cut back. Good luck with it.

reply

Same here Shannon. Thanks. I will Need it!

reply

Four O'Clock is a fitting follow-up to The Little People. I sense a potential theme -- Last Night of a Jockey should come next (but it doesn't).

:-)

reply

Obsessive thoughts are a common theme in TZ!

reply

I was thinking of size issues, actually!

reply

That too!

reply

2 feet tall...he wants to turn evil people into dwarfs. lol I feel like turning them into the size of ants would be more dramatic.

reply

I agree. But, it occurred to me that a judgemental guy like that would think that the life of a person that short would not be worth living. And, as he said, he seems to think it would render them unable to use technology and other conveniences.

That kind of bigotry (and not thinking things through!) fits the character.

reply

Ah Yes I never looked at it that way. I was thinking to myself "why would a person 2 feet tall not be able to use a telephone or typewriter?" Now it makes sense with him being a bigot and thinking like that.

reply

I love the parrot saying "Nut!" to him.

Sorry, bird, that nut can't reach the nuts.

reply

lol
