Only an 8.0 on IMDB?

8.0/10 is a high score, but I’m surprised that with Wizard of Oz being one of the greatest films of all time that it does not hold a higher rating like an 8.9/10.

Classic films will always drop in ratings on IMDB. Fans today need graphic nudity, car chases, explosions, blood, and CGI up the ying-yang.

As ground breaking as it was in 1939 for many reasons, people today look at the painted backdrops and shake their heads.

People over 45 rate it 8.4. Most of us saw it on TV when we were young. I should watch the remastered HD version.

The HD version is incredible! Definitely notice more detail and color depth.

Well, it never was that good.

I would rate it higher, certainly, but I don't think there's any mystery here. IMDB scores are a terrible measure, most of them are off by at least 2 points, at least we know this one isn't that far off, 10 being the limit.

IMDB ratings are awful.

Every single generic superhero film is guranteed a 7.0+

The demographics are another thing. The site has a lot of young users. Look at the number of ratings films get. Recent blockbusters often get more ratings than certified classics known the world over which almost everyone grew up watching.

The Wolf of Wall Street (2013) - 1.3mill
Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977) - 1.3mill
Back to the Future (1985) - 1.1mill
Joker (2019) - 1.1mill
Jurassic Park (1993) - 930k
Jaws (1975) - 573k
Dune (2021) - 471k
Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) - 440k
Aquaman (2018) - 431k
Ghostbusters (1984) - 397k
E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) - 394k
The Wizard of Oz (1939) - 385k

Needless to say more people have definitely seen Ghostbusters than fucking Dune, more people have seen Jurassic Park than Joker and I'll go out on a limb here and say the original Star Wars is definitely more popular than The Wolf of Wall Street. IMDB users are a small, small group and they trend young, American and Male.

It's a good fantasy.
