MovieChat Forums > Lionel Messi Discussion > I'm sick of the "he's a nice, humble guy...

He's just another overpaid sportsman playing a stupid game people take way too seriously in my opinion.

reply

Correct, but I dislike how people talk about him as if he's a saint.

reply

Apart from the word "stupid ", everything else is correct.

reply

messi is tax dodging troglodytes. he look like troll. and he not loyal to barcelona.

reply

The only reason he stayed in Barcelona so long was because he had a loyalty clause in his contract.

reply

he is mercenary. he should have stay loyal to club that brought him over from s. america.

psg is soulless club that play in shit league. if messi is not merc, then he go to bayern, juve or milan. he only in psg for money. he wont win champion league with psg.

reply

Why is Messi posing with Lord Nicklas Bendtner in all those pics?

reply

How can anyone look at the pictures and not see the real GOAT there. Funny enough, Bendtner has been to prison and I think he's nicer than Messi is.

reply

Lord Bendtner was so good and better than any other player that has ever graced the game that he even played crap just to make the others look good.

Crazy fella, he did not care about stats or goals but the team.

reply

They should just rename the Ballon d'Or after him.

reply

I did not know he’s a balloonist too.

reply

People confuse his unselfish playing style with his personality/attitude but he has always been arrogant and at times even belligerent.

reply

Absolutely. I've often thought that if Ronaldo's style of play was similar to Messi's (holding the ball and trying to nutmeg), people would call Ronaldo a ball hog. But when Messi does it, they think it works magic.

reply

It might even be a stretch to say Messi´s playing style is "unselfish", he was the most dispossessed player in Europe at some point and constantly ranks highly when it comes to losing the ball. Even has the record for most dispossessions in a Champions League match (7) but the media never talks about these unfavourable stats.

reply

Remember when everybody loved Ronaldo? Yes, it seems unimaginable, but there was a time when he was worshipped as a god who could do no wrong. Let's hope this guy is going to end up the same way.

reply

I hope Messi scores on his own net and Croatia ends up winning 1-0.

reply

Lol, we can hope, but you'd have to ask the emir of Qatar what his plans are.

reply

He was never nice man. He is only nice when suit him. You can see lots of agression in his body language. He is also Argentinian and they are all pretty rude.

He also is tax cheater. No way Messi is Nice guy, hero or anything like that.

reply

The amount of times he has talked back to a referee without receiving a yellow says everything. No matter what he does, people will always see him as a good guy.

reply

I don't think anyone from that Barcelona era (2009-2015) was good guy. Bunch of divers and Madrid haters.

Only players that were mostly fair play were Iniesta,Abidal and Yaya Toure.

reply

You can see something from his expression when a reporter is really laying it on thick. He does not seem to be someone who is even slightly weary of the praise coming his way. He has a great footballing brain. That does not mean he has a complex mind. He is neither a bad guy nor a good one. He is average. I.e. someone who probably would cheat or has cheated on his wife with groupies, like Pele, Maradona (oh definitely) or both Ronaldos have done and will keep doing. He is not a saint.

He breaks down his opponents with brute 'force'. He is a queer fish, in that he is neither a tap in merchant like van Basten was nor a scorer of great goals like Zidane, or Bergkamp... he is somewhere on that spectrum. He is a powerfully gifted footballer, but he lacks subtlety. He is a bulldozer with his amazing ability to pass the ball, dribble, or score. We will have to wait for decades to see someone come anywhere close to his insane power.

But compare any of his Ballon D'or wins to the first one that Cruyff won. Cruyff was the best player in Europe in 1970. Yet he scored just ONE GOAL in the European Cup that season. Let that sink in.

I have nothing against Messi though, especially outside of football. His tax dodging antics are just a drop in the bucket as far as tax evasion is concerned. Crusty and shady businessmen are the ones who ought to be punished for their frankly anti- patriotic, sneaky, disgusting ways to cheat their government.

reply

When Messi won player of the tournament in the 2014 World Cup, he didn't get a goal in the knockout stages and only got one assist in the first knockout stage. He was tied for third most goals. When he won player of the tournament in the 2022 World Cup, 4 of his 7 goals were from penalties. Mbappe scored 8 goals and only 2 were penalties. Why did Messi win beat player? FIFA and the media really have a love affair with him.

reply

Agreed, Muller should have won in 2014. Mbappe deserved to win something and might have been acknowledged had his team won in the penalty shootout. But the latter will shine in future World Cups. Only, Mbappe as a sportsman is cut roughly from the same cloth as Messi. You might dislike him even more than Messi when Mbappe gets more exposure. Just consider Messi as a benign pustule if it helps you sleep better :)

reply

I actually quite like Mbappe. Especially compared to Messi.

reply

Agreed! And he is not the Goat,Cristiano Ronaldo is!

reply

I don't understand why Messi gets so much positive PR. That's why so many people think he's the GOAT. They give him all the credit for a team's success, while Ronaldo gets accused of having his team help him.
