The bros were two very funny guys, especially Tommy.

Their show was pretty much before my time, but I do remember seeing The Smothers Bros. on TV shows (like "Hollywood Squares"). They hosted a fantastic folk music concert that brought back a lot of the 50s and 60s folk artists that PBS still airs sometimes today. And one of the great things about YouTube is that a lot of the musical artists from their shows are there for someone like me to view. They seemed to welcome musical artists that were considered controversial back then (like Jefferson Airplane, The Doors, et.al.).

A couple of other takeaways for me:

1. They were both really talented musicians. Tom was a very good guitarist and they both had great singing voices. They seemed to concentrate more on the humor, though.

2. They really, really, really seemed to hate censorship.

Also, if I remember correctly, Tom told Mason Williams that "Classical Gas" would never be a hit, because Tom didn't like the orchestral interlude in the middle. Tom got that one wrong! 😃

RIP, Tommy Smothers.

2. Oh, yes. Famous for that. Google Smothers Brothers censored

I was a baby then, but have seen their comedy acts on other shows. They were funny. In Living Color parodied them as "The Toms". May he RIP.

it's amazing how short it seems his career was.

Is this the last one of 2023?

RIP

reply

Sad. I actually didn’t know he was still alive.

I vaguely remember they had some kind of revival show in the early 90s that my parents use to watch.

86 is a pretty good run.

RIP Tommy

John Lennon liked him more than his brother, who he called an asshole at a Smothers Brothers performance in the 70's, during Lennon's "Lost Weekend" period.

reply

Ha, I didn't know that. I will say Dick did a good job at portraying a not-so-nice guy in Casino.

Note; in the article, it said the drink that fueled this incident was Brandy Alexander's, but in his 1980 Playboy interview, Lennon said it was Harvey Wallbangers, IIRC.

Thanks for the link. I didn't know about this particular incident. I was getting nostalgic for the 1970s while reading (I was a teenager) and was thinking this exact thought when I read: "Lennon can be glad of one thing; that iPhones didn’t exist in 1974 as we think he may have found himself in hot water more often than not."
