Suicide Squad was not awesome.... it was an incoherent, nonsensical mess that was only marginally better than its predecessor in terms of structure and pacing.

But given where it came from, what it delivered looked leagues better to easily-appeased consumers.

I actually fear for DC because James Gunn isn't as great as people make him out to be. I also agree with Guitar King, a lot of what Gunn does is just teenage-tier cringe-inducing.

To the credit of David Ayer, the first Suicide Squad wasn't as cringy as the soft-reboot/sequel, but it was bad. Also some of the deaths were at least unexpected, unlike Gunn's mess, where there was just a barrage of character deaths right at the start and then everyone got plot armor until they didn't.
