THE most overrated director of all time

Look at his face. Look at his ridicolous artsy fartsy "style".
Even his stupid name is pretentious.
His movies are just "oscar" baits built around some gimmick to allure today's oscars "critics". (Like that piece of junk is actually worth anything in the real art world).
He's a one trick pony two bit whore begging for attention come award season.

Other than that, he has no soul, inspiration, vision, creativity, anything.
I wouldn't dare say art because this clown has no notion of what art is.

I can't tolerate the state of modern cinema.

Sir, this is an Arby's drive-thru

Now who can argue with that?

Well, I enjoyed The Revenant (but not as much as similarly themed Mountain Man films from the 70s) but I must agree that Inarritu (Insert proper squiggles above relevant letters) does indeed have a very pretentious style, face and name.

I get him mixed up with Cuaron all the time and have to look his filmography. Now that I have, I can say that I only like two of his films while the others, including the annoying Revenant, are indeed artsy-farsty faire

I don't hate him as much as you do, but I do agree that he's very pretentious. His movies have a tendency to appear very pompous and vain, it's as though he wants you to concentrate on him just as much as the story. He makes a lot of stylistic and narrative choices that seem like they're there more to show off his "auteurism" than what actually serves the film best.

I know a lot of people really liked the one-take gimmick in Birdman, but for me, it was just that, a gimmick. I suppose you can rationalize it by saying it's meant to reflect the way a live theatre performance is captured in one take, but it's really just a cheap, pseudo-artistic justification for what is ultimately just an excuse for him and Chivo to show off their craft, however impressive it may be. He kinda gets away with his pretentious, self-serving style there, as the story IS about pretentious, self-serving artists (though, I doubt that was his intent). In the end, I KINDA like Birdman, but I definitely don't think it's the masterpiece many people see it as.

His other two films I've seen of him, however (Biutiful, The Revenant) felt very shallow and lacking in substance, and seem to only really exist just for him to stroke his pretentious artist ego by making films as bleak and depressing as possible (a common mindset in plenty of shallow artists out there). The Revenant felt like nothing but a showcase for long takes and natural lighting, as supported by vague, empty existential themes to justify its length and brutality. Unlike The Revenant, Biutiful actually had something of a story, but seemed to mainly just exist to make its audience feel depressed and dreary, as the only point it seems to be making is "life sucks".

I think he has the talent to make some great films if he can learn to put aside his ego and need for recognition as an artist, but I also think he needs to find something to say to go along with his showoffy craft.

I am quite positive the G. in his name is for Gimmick.

Your other comments are right on the money, exactly how I feel too.

reply

Amen. Hate his films.

Who doesn't?
