James Brolin as James Bond

Screen tested for Bond in Octopussy before Roger Moore decided to return!

Brolin just doesn’t convince as James Bond. Great action star, if only he could have pulled off an English accent, but Broccoli wasn’t too fussed with that apparently.

I believe Brolin is underrated, but he didn't sell me as Bond. I do agree he could have been a greatb action star.

Did he do any dialogue? I'm curious whether he could pull it off. I saw a very brief clip but it was just a fight scene.

He's such an American type, the way he talks and carries himself. He's good looking enough, but just seems all wrong for that part. Of course, he's an actor, so he might have been able to pull it off. They stuck with Moore despite his age, though, so I'm guessing he didn't.

He sounds a little better in this screen test https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ksjXilVYIxw

If he had replaced Roger I wonder if they'd have dubbed him, they weren’t averse to dubbing actors, Goldfinger springs to mind.

reply

I doubt if an American is going to be hired for a British brand.

reply

If an American can pull off the accent I wouldn't care, Jon Hamm (Mad Men) would have been a good Bond in my opinion.

reply

The British care. It's a pride thing.
The Royals showed up to the Bond movie premiere to support a British brand, otherwise they normally avoid them.

The only American who could pull off a good British dialect is Meryl Streep.

reply

I'm a Brit and a James Bond fan, Meryl Streep might make a good M, Glenn Close too.

reply

Only Americans starring in one the very few popular British franchises? I still doubt it.

Whoever found Craig should decide on the next Bond actor.

reply

There are a lot of U.S. actors who are capable of speaking in a good British accent. They're not all Dick Van Dyke.

reply

I don't see him as a good fit.

PS: Just watched the video. Glad they didn't use him.

reply

But, wait. We could have Morgan Fairchild play his sidekick named Dottie.
