Awful actor

I just watched 'The Weather Man' and his accent is so amateurish it's laughable. What kind of actor are you when you can't even do a basic American accent? He's only ever capable of playing a slight variation of himself.

Interesting.

So you’re using a mediocre movie as a basis for his entire career? Nice one smooth brain.

reply

His problem as he has even admitted is that he would do any movie he was offered a role in because he has always been worried about not having a job. So if a director wanted him for a role he wasn't right for he would still do it, the end result is you get a career that has some awful movies in it and some good ones.... there are some other actors out there that have followed that same sort of path... only problem is if you do it today where 3 flops and your out, it doesn't work as well as it did for older actors that started in a time when the system didn't work like that.

I’ve watched a couple movies he was in that I heard were awful, (The Jigsaw Man, The Hand) and I thought they were descent.

There are quite a few movies that are quite decent some are down right great... but to be honest he has also done more and his share so turds. He is one of the actors where you are really better off looking at a review of the movie he is in before you watch it to avoid watching what could be a very bad movie. In the 80's you have a wide range of movies from really bad to quite good... Jaws: the Revenge is shit, while Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is a classic..

Does that include Get Carter, Alfie, and all his other films?

reply

Yikes! I saw his picture and my first thought was, "What a superb actor".

So he can't do an American accent, not everyone is Hugh Laurie. It's a gift or an odd talent or whatever you want to call it. I'd be a terrible actor but I can mimic almost any accent I hear.

As for Michael Caine, he is very talented, never mind the accent.

reply

So, your criteria is accents? Okay, fair enough. But it means nothing to you that he can be a hero or a villain with equal ease. He can make you love him or hate him. And to those who wonder why he works so much. In an interview some years back, he was asked that very question. The interviewer said that he didn't really need the money, so why did he continue to work, and he gave the answer that most good and great actors give. They love to act. It is not work when you love it as much as he does. It is his profession, plus the fact, that the more you do it, the better you get. True with any profession.

The most awful part is that he's a Brexit supporter. But fortunately we only have to deal with his acting parts, not with his cruelty.

Zulu, Alfie, The Italian Job, Get Carter, Sleuth, Hannah and Her Sisters, The Muppet Christmas Carol, Secondhand Lions, Children of Men, The Prestige, Batman Begins/ The Dark Knight, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, and by all accounts The Quiet American (I haven't seen it myself).

But, sure, his accent in The Weather Man wasn't great.

reply

Don't forget Harry Brown!

That was a mighty performance. Kind of gives me chills just thinking about it.

reply

Haven't seen it, so I couldn't have forgotten it; it's going on The List!
