James Cameron is a modern day polymath

James Cameron is not only a masterful film maker, but also a leading expert in deep sea exploration.

Some argue he could be a polymath due to his extensive skills in the various departments of filmmaking.

Direct/Write/Produce/Edit billion dollar grossing films.

Also one of the worlds leading experts on deep sea diving, accomplishing a record-breaking dive to the deepest point on Earth. The Challenger Deep.

Don't forget artist. The man himself designed the iconic Terminator exoskeleton, the Alien queen, Na'vi, etc. Just a small sample:

Wow well that pretty much confirms it.

Don't forget that recently he also became the ultimate beta male.

High praise sir..

reply

So! You think that a world-famous filmmaker-explore and self-made bazillionaire is a "Beta", and you're an "alpha"!

Riiiight...

reply

Money doesn't make you an alpha...

reply

why? what happened "recently" ?

reply

Yeah, it's almost enough to make me wish I liked his films more! I mean some of them have been terrific, but most have been... good. Spectacular in some ways, overall good in general, but very rarely memorable.

He also claims to be an inventor, BTW, but I have a bit of skepticism about that. He's not an engineer, he's someone in a position to hire engineers.

reply

Cameron films "very rarely memorable" - yeah, okay... if we're living in opposite world. Also, you keep making this asserted claim that he's not an engineer, even though you have no such evidence to support it.

reply

Whether I like his films or not is purely a matter of personal taste, and is not up for debate. At least, nobody rational would try to debate one person's subjective opinion, but I betcha you'll give it a try anyway.

As for whether or not he's an inventor, the last time this subject came up, I looked up his education and he doesn't have an engineering degree and has never formally studied engineering, he studied physics in college and then changed his major to English. Now I'm well aware than an intelligent tinkerer can know a lot about engineering without benefit of formal training and can invent stuff, so again, I looked things up. And 10 seconds of intense research turned this National Graphic article about him, which uses "Inventor" in the title. But if you actually read it all the stuff about inventing refers him assembling and running "a top team of engineers and scientists", but carefully gives credit for the invention and construction of the Deepsea Challenger to "the team", not to Cameron himself.

So while I'm still a bit skeptical about him being a full-blown inventor and amateur engineer, but I don't deny he's a clever bastard and probably as good a polymath as you're going to get.

reply

You didn't just say you disliked his films, you claimed his films were "unmemorable". You can bizarrely claim this from a subjective POV, but again it's like you're living in opposite world. Terminator and T2 were so unmemorable that they deeply permeated the public consciousness and pop culture for decades. Aliens was also so unmemorable in that way, being widely regarded as one of the most brilliant sequels ever made and solidifying Ripley as one of the greatest heroines in history.

Avatar was so unmemorable that it spawned an entire 3D industry after its release... an industry that mostly died out because no other film could match its impact. Titanic as well, which sparked multiple new generations to be fascinated with the ship, and again deeply entered the public consciousness. All of it is so highly unmemorable... if you're personally living in opposite world.

You do realize a lack of a degree means very little, right? I don't have a music degree yet can perform things that probably less than 0.1% of pianists can. Plenty of the most accomplished people in history didn't officially have degrees in their field. Cameron doesn't have a film degree either.

So your other piece of "evidence" is something that labels him as an inventor? Not exactly a point in your favor. Cameron himself has specifically said he co-designed Deepsea Challenger, and if you want me to go dig up exact timestamps, I can. He has shown extensive knowledge/experience in this area, and you're basically asking us to believe your gut feeling that he's lying. To my knowledge Mr. Cameron is not known to be a liar.

Also, look up the Fusion Camera System - co-developed and "invented" by James, but again we'll have to trust your gut as the definitive source to whether or not he had engineering input.

I have found few of Cameron's films to be involving or memorable, and if you want to rant about what I find involving or memorable, you go ahead and make a fool of yourself!

Of course I've done a whole 45 seconds of research into the question of whether Cameron qualifies as an "inventor" or not, and if you want to haul down to the US Patents Office and get serious, be my guest! I'm just curious as to why you're getting all huffy about the question of whether Cameron is an inventor or not, when I've admitted I think he's a polymath.

Are you Cameron himself, or the latest Mrs. Cameron? Cameron's PA? Or more likely, Cameron's publicist's intern? Because I just don't see why a member of the general public, with no connection to Cameron, would get all het up about this question.

reply

You're making a fool out of yourself by making the claim that Cameron's films are "unmemorable". I didn't even really need to respond to that, the ridiculousness of that statement could have stood on its own.

And yeah, I'm glad you're admitting that you've done very little research, and aren't basing your assertions on anything remotely solid. I'm glad we agree on that.

I'm just someone interested in the truth - don't go around presenting totally unsupported gut-claims as fact and we won't have a problem.

reply

Who the fuck are you to tell me what I find memorable!

Now fuck off, I'm tired of you.

reply

Who is getting "all huffy" now?

I've already responded to your absurd claims, feel free to re-read my previous posts.

reply

‘Very rarely memorable’
Nobody remembers:

Terminator 1.
Terminator 2.
The Abyss.
Titanic.
Aliens.

OK.
