Is it just me, or is anyone else NOT excited for this at all?

I'm not the type to bring undue negativity to a film, but I can't get over the fact that every time I see something about this movie it just does not look good.

Frankly, I'm just not seeing what's to get excited about here. From what I can tell from all the trailers, there's not much of a plot. It's basically Humans Go To Island --> Humans Fight Kong --> Kong Fights Some Other Creatures --> The End.

Granted, I could be wrong and the trailers are holding back on pretty much all the plot, but I think what we're going to end up with here is two hours of action with a threadbare plot to hold it together.

And I have to say, while I know Peter Jackson's film has been greatly criticized over the years, I rather enjoyed it and think it looks about 10x better than this film. Not only did it have a fleshed out story, but it did one thing I have to give it a lot of credit for:

It made me care about a CGI gorilla. I always tear up a little when Kong dies at the end.

How many ways can Kong be remade? I've heard trailers basically show the best scenes (concise) and if it's true the remainder of the film is filler. I'm really tired of getting hyped because of the hype surrounding a film, any film, then being let down. and Yep, so do I get teary eyed at Kong's treatment & death. Take then destroy when it should have been left alone.

Re: getting hyped, sadly I get less hyped by movies in general than I did in my younger years.

I also have been engaging less with the marketing, though. These days the studios will bring out a teaser . . . then a trailer one . . . then a trailer two . . . and maybe some behind-the-scenes featurette or extended trailer. By the time they're done, it's like you've already seen the whole movie!

So I'll usually watch one trailer and if I'm interested in the movie I'll go see it. But I ignore all the other promotional stuff.

"sadly I get less hyped by movies in general than I did in my younger years." I should've said I don't get hyped anymore. At my age there don't appear to be any new ideas, just newer ways to present the old.

If I see a trailer now I decide right then if it's something worthy, and add it to my list of want-to-see. I'm usually 2 years or more behind watching movies currently playing, and I don't watch any award shows to see what has won what. Apocalypto and The Revenant are an example of the lag-behind that I am.

There are probably no new stories that borrow nothing from old ones, but I do think new movies come out that feel fresh and original, especially on the independent circuit.

Just a few that come to mind: American Honey, Whiplash, Predestination, Sound of My Voice and Blue Ruin.

I also watched Allied a few nights ago, and while we've seen plenty of WWII movies in the past, I felt like I had never seen one quite like this one.

This is setting up an eventual Kong vs. Godzilla film later on. So Kong here is humongous, so that he has a fighting chance against Godzilla.

The past Kongs who climbed skyscrapers would've been completely dwarfed by Godzilla, who himself is taller than skyscrapers.

Seems like a pretty lazy and unnecessary film, the original was in 1933 and it's already been remade in 1976 and 2005. What's the point of this one?

reply

I believe they are trying to do a Kong vs. Godzilla film (which would be a Universal + Warner Bros. team up) and this 2007 Kong film is one of the setups to that eventual film.

And one of the first things they did was make Kong much bigger in this version. He makes the Peter Jackson, 1976 and 1933 look like a cute baby in comparison.

reply

Yeah, I've heard that too. A Kong vs Godzilla movie is coming. This is just setting the stage for that film.

I hope they have some explanation for why Kong is so goddamn big in this one.

reply

Probably the same explanation as to why Kong was big in previous films?
Just because he is bigger doesn't mean the explanation is going to be any different.

You answered my question here so I deleted the other one. I've really got to finish reading all the comments Before I ask someone a question directly.

No worries. The way the board is "nested" does kind of make it confusing when reading some replies.

I'm super hyped. But make no mistake. The only thing i'm there to see is huge monsters fighting on an IMAX screen. The film is sure to be terrible, of that I have no doubt whatsoever.

reply

King Kong again?

So many action movies are remakes and superheroes.

I have little interest in this film.

Both Jackson and Goodman are getting on in years. And they both look fighting mean in this. Won't see that too many more times.

reply

Eh, this looks better than the 3 hour 2005 remake where Kong went ice skating.

I actually liked the Peter Jackson film.

I have to give it a lot of credit because it did one thing I really didn't expect: It made me care for a CGI gorilla. I always get a little teary eyed when Kong dies at the end.

reply

My excitement level depends how drunk I am. Anyhow, my theater is far away. I'm not making a 90 minute road trip for this.
