What did you fellers watch this week? (O4/07-04/13) CLOSED

Fun fact; this week my daughter tells me “daddy please put the movie with the kids and the superhero.” I’m like “you’re gonna have to be more precise than that darling.” She then says “you know the superhero was singing some songs with the kids.” Yes, she was meaning Creating Rem Lazar! Because she was with me when we watched it and now I had to sit through the whole thing again for her because she truly loves it. 😂

Shred (2008 Tubi): I’m a Jackass fan so a movie staring David England who is, let’s be honest, NOT an actor, is not something that puts me off. Something that turns me on though is seeing Tom Green in a film! Even if he can’t act much better than David! I just love Tom so fricking much, when he’s on screen I’m happy and he was on screen pretty often here. As for the film, it has lots and I mean LOTS of cool snowboarding footage which also made for some beautiful BC landscape images. The story was fine, simple but structured, which is actually more than I expected. There was even a decent amount of sweetness, love and obviously, humour. Already looking forward to the sequel. My rating: 6.5/10

Shred 2 (2009 Tubi): I admit it, I couldn’t wait. I wanted more. That’s okay because turns out the sequel did not disappoint either! Au contraire, it was so much fun to find the characters after they struggle for success and now that things are going well for them trouble awaits. The first one went uphill this one goes downhill. See what I did there? Also, I was curious to see what they would do with Tom Green’s character because at the end of the first one he’s pretty much defeated. Unfortunately he was barely there for the sequel but at least they managed to make him fit in the story again. Finally , the boobs are better in this one! Now I’m thinking that I’ll need to purchase the 2 movies to complete my Tom Green collection. I got everything from him up to the beer that he brewed! My rating: 6.5/10

Vampire’s kiss (Friday night special ): A week ago this movie wasn’t even on my radar and now I’m just really glad I picked it to start our weekend. Like shogun said; if we took a shot every time Nicolas Cage went completely psycho crazy, no one would’ve finished the movie. Ha! It’s literally by the minute and it was quite the spectacle to watch. The relationship between him and Alva was a unique and most entertaining one. it was quirky, over the top and I liked it. My rating: 7/10

The last seduction (Friday late night special): It was a bit of a chore for me to sit through. No relatable character and only the girl made it somewhat interesting… at least when she wasn’t on the phone which she was for half the fucking movie. Not sexy enough, too much talking and the story moved too slowly. The last 30 minutes were the best. My rating: 4.5/10

Horny Teenagers Must Die! (Friday late late night special): It was very bad. But it was my first time lasting so late and I was very tired too so it’s okay. 1 point for the sex, 1 point for the gore and 0.5 for the story. My rating: 2.5/10

Old (Saturday night special): This movie made me feel all types of ways. And that’s a good thing. I felt the music, the eeriness and the mesmerizing landscape. I felt the tension, the confusion, the chain of strange events affected me and left an impression on my mind. Let’s not forget that it was at times comical. Not laugh out loud funny, but comical. I truly enjoyed this movie. It would obviously make a great duo with Knock at the cabin but even better, I’d match it with Mother!. That’d be dope. Unfortunately, I did find that the ending was not as great as the rest of the movie, but it was alright. My rating: 7.5/10

The conference (Saturday late night special): Another slick looking film filled with neat tricks and techniques behind the camera. The story dragged a little bit but things get wild enough and the payoff is there. Could’ve been a little bit funnier though. The funniest thing to me was how much damage the killer (who was pretty cool btw) actually took. That was good. My rating: 6.5/10

Scrubs S7: With only 11 episodes and a final one that was not great, it won’t be remembered as one of the best seasons but still, it remains one of my favourite show. 8/10

My rating system:

That's cute. Your daughter sounds adorable, just like you.

Vampire’s kiss 8/10
The last seduction 8/10
Old 7/10
The conference 6/10

I watched:

The First Omen 2024 6/10 I thought this was just alright. I didn't find it overly scary or thrilling. It was a little too predictable and formulaic. The screenplay was decent and the performances were pretty good.

Super Miss 2018 6/10 This was cute and amusing.

It Happened Tomorrow 1944 7/10 This was enjoyable and entertaining.

The Breaking Point 1950 6/10 A well acted film noir, but I found it only moderately interesting.

Act of Violence 1948 7/10 Good performances in this effective film noir.

Mikey and Nicky 1976 6/10 Well acted, but I didn't find this very engaging or interesting.

War Babies 1932 6/10 I think this was intended to be funny and cute. Viewers today are seeing it as something obscene, which I don't believe it was ever intended to be. It's silly and the kids are cute. It may be weird, but I don't consider it obscene or pornographic, as many on Letterboxd seem to.

Thief 1981 6/10 This was alright, but not as good as I expected based on its reputation. I felt it dragged at times and wasn't as interesting or engaging as it should have been.

Little Cooper 2020 5/10 This is somewhat amateurish, but has some charm.

Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Mask 3D 2022 5/10 I actually like The Mask. It's an entertaining and fun movie on its own. I didn't care for the stupid comments by the MST3K people as they weren't very funny and were mostly annoying.

The Limping Man 1953 5/10 I found this boring for the most part.

The Fast and the Furious 1954 6/10 This was alright.

Rescue Me 1992 5/10 I didn't care for Stephen Dorff or Michael Dudikoff's performances. Ami Dolenz was the best part and it would have been better if the film focused more on her. This wasn't very funny or entertaining and it dragged on too long.

Best Offer 1993 7/10 This was cute.

God’s Little Acre 1958 6/10 The performances are fine and I liked the cinematography. The story wasn't all that interesting though and it felt longer than it was.

Maya at 24 2021 6/10 There's not much to this and I'm not sure what the point of it is. It's not bad and the idea is interesting, but they could have done more with it.

#Blackmendream 2014 8/10 This was interesting and effective.

The Love Goddesses 1965 6/10 This is very dated and surface level. It should have gone more in depth and benefited from a clearer focus. I did enjoy some of the clips and the flawed narration was amusing at times.

Kid West 2017 7/10 This was cute and fun. Mary Bair is quite charming and delivers a delightful and enjoyable performance.

Canadian Bacon 1995 6/10 Some amusing bits, but not everything works and it should have been funnier. Good fun cast though.

But I’m a Cheerleader 1999 8/10 (rewatch) Great screenplay, funny and smart film. Good performances from a fun cast.

The Last Angel of History 1996 6/10 A lot of interesting ideas here, but not everything works.

From My River, with Love 7/10 Lovely cinematography, but there isn't much substance or story here, although that may be intentional. Some parts I found more interesting than others and much of your enjoyment of the film may depend on how much you connect, relate to or like the individuals in the different segments. Worth a watch.

The Adventures of Thomasina Sawyer 2018 6/10 Why does this have so many credited directors? It's an alright kids film. The story is just okay, the acting is fine. Some cute moments, but it drags on a little too long.

Rich and Strange 1931 5/10 Performances are alright, but this was not very interesting.

Puzzle 1974 6/10 This had some good moments, but overall it was just alright.

Argylle 2024 6/10 Chip the Cat stars as Alfie the Cat, a heroic kitty who gets mixed up with spies. Chip clearly gives the best performance in the film. Bryce Dallas Howard and Sam Rockwell are good too. The film is far too long though and loses steam repeatedly. There are lots of twists and turns and the film can't pull them all off. Some amusing moments though.

Civil War 2024 7/10 I don't think this is as good as Alex Garland's other films. I still liked it, but it felt like it was missing something. Kirsten Dunst and Cailee Spaeny are good here and there are some effective moments. I just was expecting more substance though.

Coup de Chance 2023 6/10 Not as good as some of Allen's other films, but still worth watching. The actors did a good job and the film moves at a good pace. The writing isn't as strong with this one though, but it is kind of neat to see Allen do a film in French.

The Debut 1977 8/10 I thought this was really interesting and well written. Marina de Graaf is fantastic.

Vampire’s Kiss 1988 8/10 Nicholas Cage is fantastic here. The screenplay is very good and there are some effective, memorable moments.

The Last Seduction 1994 8/10 Linda Fiorentino is excellent in this entertaining neo noir thriller.

Woody Woodpecker Goes to Camp 2024 4/10 The acting in this isn't very good and the screenplay is poorly written, cliched and predictable. The movie isn't very funny or enjoyable. Woody is more annoying than cute or entertaining.

Shirley 2024 7/10 Regina King is excellent here and the rest of the supporting cast are good too. The way the story is told feels a little by the numbers though and the writing doesn't live up to the performances. This feels like it could have been great, but as is, it is still a worthwhile, fine film anchored by a strong lead performance.

A Stitch in Time 1963 6/10 Wacky shenanigans and silly slapstick. Some of it works, some of it is dated and doesn't land quite right.

Don’t Go Tellin’ Your Momma 2021 7/10 It's a short film that features several very short segments based on the concept of the Black ABCs. Some of the segments worked better than others, but it was interesting to see how they did it. Worth checking out.

A Girl’s Own Story 1984 7/10 This was interesting and well shot.

Old 2021 7/10 This was an interesting and fun rewatch.

The Conference 2023 6/10 An entertaining and effective Swedish slasher with some fun kills and good editing.

Collateral (2004) 6/10 Tom Cruise plays a villain who uses taxi cab driver Jamie Foxx to take him to his crime locations. Good acting, but tests your suspension of disbelief.

Exhuma (2024) 5/10 Korean, in a theater. 2 hours and 14 minutes was too long for this horror film. It dragged. After tracing the origin of a disturbing supernatural affliction to a wealthy family's ancestral grave site, a team of paranormal experts relocates the remains. They discover what happens to those who mess with the wrong grave. They should have cut at least 30 minutes.

Crew (2024) 9/10. Indian (Hindi) in a theater. Stonekeeper Movie Guessing Game #2381. Three ordinary air hostesses from Mumbai embark on a dangerous journey to pursue their dreams. Great script with lots of unexpected plot twists and turns. They don't break into a song and dance number until the final credits. Shorter than most Indian films.

Recently, but before last week:

Lisa Frankenstein (2024) 4/10 Nice try, but poor execution for this $5 Regal Monday Mystery Movie. High school girl hides and helps a zombie from a local cemetery.

The Movie Emperor (2024) 3/10 Chinese, in a theater. Nearly every Hong Kong or Chinese film I've seen has been terrible. A comedy that was boring, not funny. A washed up actor has a film idea to pursue a movie award by making his own movie, but it falls apart. It did have one great Laugh Out Loud moment in the last act, involving an animal.

The other recent movies are good enough to save for use in the Stonekeeper Movie Guessing Game.

Collateral: I’ve always wondered how this film could have so many 9/10s and 10/10s. It seemed to be slightly overrated but that doesn’t been I didn’t like it. I’d give it 7/10.

I really enjoy Bollywood movies but haven’t watched one for a long time. I hope I’ll bring myself to watch one soon. Crew looks like a good (and short) one.

reply

I haven’t seen any of the Shred movies.

Sounds like Creating Rem Lezar still resonates with young people like your daughter. That is wild when you think about it. Its rediscovery on YouTube and other social media is going to give it a whole new fanbase that will be nostalgic for that bizarre superhero adventure in another 10-20 years!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Vampire’s Kiss (1988)
Nicolas Cage is enthralling and over-the-top as a man who believes he is a vampire. His performance gets loonier by the minute, and it's highly entertaining. Maria Conchita Alonso and Jennifer Beals both deliver great performances. Alonso, in particular, is classy and charming as Cage’s meek secretary, who resiliently endures his increasingly bizarre behavior. I couldn’t help but notice some parallels in plot and character with Cage’s more recent film Renfield (2023) which I liked almost as much as this film. Vampire’s Kiss gets a very solid 8/10

The Last Seduction (1994)
I love movies about psychopaths and sociopaths, and this one was pretty good but didn’t quite hit the mark.

Linda Fiorentino delivers a brilliant performance as a remorseless, manipulative sociopath who cleverly schemes her way through the plot. The story starts off well with intriguing characters that got me engaged in the story. However, the film would have benefitted by tightening up the second act, which began to get repetitive and could easily have been trimmed by 20 minutes.

Another issue is the portrayal of Peter Berg's character, who seems far too naive. I think the idea was that Fiorentino got a hold of him while he was in a vulnerable place in life--a consequence of a recently failed marriage--making him easily susceptible to her manipulation. However, I feel the filmmakers could have communicated that part of the story a little better; at times, his infatuation with Fiorentino seemed baseless and strained credulity, especially in some of the final minutes of the film. Overall, still a pretty good movie. Rating: 6/10.

Old (2021)
I really don’t have much to say about this one. It started off kind of intriguing, and the beach and scenery were gorgeous, but nothing else really worked for me. The dialogue was some of the worst writing I have ever heard; no one talks like that in real life! The lines were so uncannily inhuman-sounding that they negatively affected the story. I was expecting something otherworldly to be behind the bizarre events. I could sense that there was an external presence observing the islanders, reminiscent of The Truman Show (1998), but I expected it to be something grander than what was ultimately revealed, which I found incredibly underwhelming. It's not a terrible film; it just didn’t resonate much with me. 6/10

Love, Divided (2024) (original title ‘Pared con Pared’) Netflix Originals.
Love, Divided tells the tale of Valentina, a young classical pianist gearing up for a high-profile audition. As she settles into her new apartment in the heart of Madrid, she quickly encounters her neighbor, David—a reclusive, grumpy, and socially awkward inventor who detests loud noises. David occupies the apartment immediately next to hers and hasn't left the building in over three years. Complicating matters further is the paper-thin wall separating their apartments; although they can't see each other, they can speak as if in the same room.

For obvious reasons, conflict and comedic situations ensue as our two leads initially can’t stand each other due to their starkly different lifestyles. What’s curious is that each neighbor is currently struggling with their own outside personal issues that eventually enter their living situation. Soon enough, Valentina and David begin to fall for each other, simply by candidly conversing through the wall and finding they have much in common—all without ever knowing what the other looks like.

If you’re reading this thinking, ‘This sounds like a completely stupid premise for a film,’ I agree; yet somehow, it works. Although it follows the common rom-com trope of two people who initially can't stand each other, it avoids the typical plot contrivances and unrelatable characters that plague many modern films of the genre, which seem to be written exclusively to socially engineer unattainable expectations for real-life relationships. The two leads of this film are relatable and have undeniable chemistry together, with Valentina, played by Pop-Singer Aitana in her feature-film debut, being exceptionally charming and endearing.

Euro-films generally have more artistic photography than Hollywood films, and this film is no exception, as director Patricia Font makes good use of moving camera shots to convey the idea of a relationship that exists with a wall separating the main characters.

My main criticism is that the characters' early decision to avoid meeting face-to-face feels slightly underdeveloped, even when addressed through dialogue. At times, I found myself thinking, ‘It’s just a movie; I’ll go with it.’ Additionally, I felt some of the characters’ decisions made in the final scene of the film stretched believability. However, I can give it a pass because I understand the symbolism Font was going for.

Overall, this slightly saccharine rom-com is more light-hearted than outright comedic, yet it manages to be relatable and surprisingly entertaining. As an introvert who usually works from home and is a former musician, I found both characters relatable and well-performed by the actors. I usually don’t like rom-coms; however, the plot of this particular film had such a sweet, simplistic innocence to it that I enjoyed it quite a bit. 7.5/10

(I watched this in the original Spanish-Audio and can’t speak to the quality of the English-dub.)

Assault on Precinct 13 (1976)
A Police Officer and his support staff are forced to team up with a band of convicted criminals to defend a decommissioned LA precinct against a relentless siege by a vicious LA street gang.

Assault on Precinct 13 is a masterclass in creating a menacing tone and ominous atmosphere. One thing I find so interesting about this film is how it somehow feels like a Western and a Horror film, yet it's neither of those. The horror element is the most intriguing, because there are no supernatural elements in the story, yet there is an undercurrent of terror running through the film, especially in the gang members' actions. They seem to act out of evil malevolence, almost like they are possessed. This is especially apparent in the final scenes of the film, where the gang members finally invade the precinct while acting like Zombies from Night of the Living Dead (1968). Apparently, this was intentional on the part of the filmmakers; I saw a screening of the film at NYFA a few years ago with Carpenter presenting, and he talked about how he was drawing from Rio Bravo (1959) and Howard Hawks’ westerns, but also Romero’s zombie films.

Austin Stoker really carries a lot of this film. His soft-spoken yet confident demeanor had a lot of presence, and his subtle swagger and everyman persona gave the audience a relatable protagonist. I once saw him playing a bodyguard in a straight-to-VHS film in the nineties who had no lines, and it kind of made me sad; it sucks that he didn't have a bigger career.

Alongside Stoker, Darin Josten’s portrayal of Napoleon Wilson is noteworthy. The Napoleon character is cool, and Darin Josten has pretty good chemistry with Stoker. However, I feel like Josten didn't totally bring the character to life the way Carpenter had written him. Carpenter has since commented that Napoleon Wilson was a prototype for his later character ‘Snake Plisken’ in Escape from New York (1984), describing both as "unredeemed killers" with a knack for delivering snappy, charismatic lines. Indeed, you can almost hear the character archetype Carpenter was building up to in many of Wilson's snappy one-liners, such as "Then let's pinch each other and wake up." - - I can totally hear Kurt Russell saying that line as Plisken.

Carpenter’s decision to include the controversial scene of the ice cream girl's murder drew significant criticism and influenced his later career choices. In one interview, he mentioned the reason he made Starman (1984) was to soften his image, as he earned a reputation for being mentally disturbed. His critics regularly cited the young girl's murder, along with his other films like Halloween (1978), as evidence of his being deranged. While this might seem silly today, I suppose during the early '80s, such perceptions had the potential to derail a filmmaker's career.

Beyond his direction, I love Carpenter’s scores; the guy is a genius to be able to write, shoot, and score these films, and do them all so well. This is one of those films where I let the end credits roll just to keep listening to the awesome synth score.

I’ve seen this film at least twenty times, and it’s one of my regular rewatches. 9/10

Had a pretty fun week/weekend.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine's Final 2 seasons (Netflix). FINALLY finished after putting it off for a while. Season 7 was pretty darn good but the final season was kind of a letdown. It wasn't bad, just fine. Ending was pretty entertaining though. 7.5/10

Rick and Morty season 7 (Netflix): Holy shit, this season produced a lot of stinkers! I legit only enjoyed just 3 episodes out of the whole season. The show peaked in season 3 imo. 4/10

Scissor Seven season 4 (Netflix): I accidentally found this Chinese anime like a year or 2 ago. It's pretty darn good. Only complaint is, episodes are waaay too short. 8/10

The Gentlemen season 1 (Netflix): The 2019 movie is one of my favorites & Guy Ritchie returned for another excellent outing. This was so darn good. The performance were great, the writing & directing were also wonderful. One of the best things Netflix have produced in a while imo. 9/10.

If you like horror anthologies there's probably a few stories in there that you'd like.

There are more movies in the series but I haven't watched them yet.
