Do you miss opening title sequences & songs for tv shows?

Or do you not care for them? I've noticed that they've been on the way out for a while. Especially in the streaming era.

Currently watching "The Gentlemen" on Netflix. You'll get the title card & episode name & on we go. Excellent show but I honestly feel like it's missing an opening theme.

I honestly think they're an art form when done correctly. My current faves been the ones for Succession & Severance(my current ringtone)

I get that you wanna just "skip intro" & get to the episode already but there just some that are "unskippable" imo. Like the ones for Daredevil, Stranger Things & The Sopranos. They add to the enjoyment imo.

I also love short ones like for the ones for Lost, Breaking Bad & Better Call Saul.

What about y'all? How do you feel about 'em? Do YOU miss 'em, love 'em or nah?

reply

Yeah. I think a good title sequence and theme tune can set the tone and get some anticipation going for an episode of a favourite show.

But, as you suggest, they've probably gone out of a fashion a bit precisely because people tend to skip them.

Perhaps I'm misremembering, but they seem to have gone out of fashion considerably earlier for films than they did for TV shows -- and presumably people don't skip for films as it's a one-off, so maybe it's also a way of making TV shows feel more 'cinematic'.

I remember watching a video a few weeks ago just about that subject. On the films side, I mean.

Even Marvel movies put theirs at the END. Which is honestly a shame, cause some of them are honest pretty darn amazing.

I'm glad that at least the James Bond movies are at least still doing them.

reply

I liked Game of Thrones as a recent example, but after a few episodes in a season I would start to skip them.

reply

Understandable. Even though I liked the GoT theme, it kinda felt like it "went on forever" sometimes.

reply

I miss them, but when I'm watching sitcoms, I think ones that are a minute or longer are way too long. I don't mind long ones for dramas.

reply

Sitcoms are the exceptions for me. In the sense that, even though they're responsible for some of the most iconic theme songs of all times, I don't really care for most of them.

The 2 I could think that I rarely skipped are the ones for The Golden Girls & Community.

reply

The Community theme is a good example of a quick one. There's no need for the one minute long ones where they finally show the actor's names 30 seconds into the song.

It's always sunny is another great one imo.

This one is a favorite of mine:

That one is pretty excellent!

When watching older TV shows I skip the title sequence. It gets tiresome seeing the same sequence and hearing the same music over and over. Then there's Boy Meets World, Home Improvement, and The Big Bang Theory which don't have good music but I enjoy the actual shows.

I remember looking forward to some of them. Cheers was a good one. Doctor Who I loved.

I can't say I miss any of them. However, there are a few opening sequences for TV shows I think are halfway decent - musically I mean......

Yes...I miss them also. The great ones just "set the tone," so to speak, of their shows.

When I was watching "The Sopranos" on HBO back in April 2020 (when they had "free streaming" for a month, due to COVID), I couldn't skip the intro (even though I was on a time deadline), just because that theme just set the mood so perfectly for that show. Same with the "Law & Order" theme...they just become etched in your mind over time.
