How many times have you been recruited by a cult?

Or cult-like organizations like pyramid marketing schemes?

Been approached a few times. Once a co-worker invited me to an career seminar which turned out to be a religious event. They kept trying to invite me to their retreats and Bible groups after that. Two friends tried to get me to sign up for two different pyramid marketing scams - one selling a whole array of crap from household products to vitamins. The other one was selling some junky water filter. Then I went to a local church a few times, then went back a few weeks later and a strange lady cornered me and asked where had I been, why did I leave the church.

The closest I have ever been to joining a cult was being a major Trekkie and original Van Halen fan when I was younger.

Both are perfectly understandable cults to fall in with.

i have an older first cousin who is a jehovah's witness. i haven't seen her in over 40 years. she wouldn't attend her mother's funeral because they are not allowed to enter other places of worship. her whole family is a mess as some of her children left the cult and were ostracized. she keeps waiting for the new system.

Once. I was invited to a party by a guy I knew and it was a pleasant time until the talk turned to how great everybody was doing with some AMWAY sounding operation. I finished my drink and politely left the party.

ETA: I know very little about Jehovah's Witnesses and didn't realize they are considered a cult by some. Then I read the entire thread and realized this seems to be the case. There are a ton of them in New York and I've had dozens of encounters with them over many years. I just politely disengage and close the door when they come knocking, they always seemed polite and went way quickly when I declined in a nice way.
