Mandatory military service

Used to be a thing for people who were born in the 80s (me)

So I'm 18, had to sign up for recruit and spend the day making physical and mental tests. I made sure to sabotage every test so my results would match a individual with single iq digits.

At the end, the military officer was looking at my results and asked if I wanted to be in the military, to which I replied swiftly "absolutely not"

He said without looking at me, "good, you're in"

WTF

Does anyone think there will be anything other than just taking anyone to turn them into hamburger meat when push comes to shove?

reply

Having spent time with people who have down syndrome, I honestly don't think this person has it. If true, it would have made the news and been internationally condemned. Is their a source other than social media?

reply

Years ago, our military downgraded the physical requirements and I think you had to be able to something like 15 sit ups or something equally ridiculous.

I think the bar is pretty low right about now for enlistment and should things heat up, I can see it being pretty low.

When I was in naval bootcamp in Great Lakes back in 1990, they mashed the shit out of us.. I actually looked at the drill instructor wrong and I had to be escorted over to a Gymnasium at 2:30AM and participate in some serious exercise, exercise I never even knew existed at the time.. It was a long 9 weeks and couldn't wait for it to end.. In modern day, I have no idea how bootcamp is, but the younger generation probably couldn't handle a drill instructor up in their face calling them every name in the book without calling their parents and filing a lawsuit over it.

reply

It's probably worse now.

The drill instructor probably purposely misgenders them and hits the dislike button on their YouTube videos.

💯 LOL

What country are you from?
I know Israel has mandatory service rules and it does seem like a good idea in some places.

What branch of your nation's military did you enter?
I never ask a vet if he or she 'saw action' or 'killed a guy' as that seems rude but I always like to hear about the mundane day to day service experiences...food, barracks conditions, day to day duties, machinery, weaponry, training and so forth.

If you don't want to share that's cool, I just like hearing about experiences from vets as it's very interesting.

Portugal, this was 2001. I was assigned a year's worth of some desk job, but still a managed to skip as I was ending the course in a professional school.

I'm sure the military makes wonders for some people, especially the lazy or directionless ones, it wasn't the time for me.

reply

Ah! Portugal.
I'd like to see your country myself someday, I've heard many good things. Yonkers has a Portuguese community, lots of good food and company with the Portuguese neighbors. Many of them grew nice gardens and two of my direct neighbors grew grapes and made wine which was pretty cool to me as a kid.

That's nice to read 😊 we're very dedicated to our foods and wines that's for sure hehe also known for the beaches and nice weather.

Lately Nazaré (100ft wave spot) has also been in the eyes of the world as it's big wave season.

WHOA! That's crazy.

Looks like the waves Bodhi disappeared in in the last scene of Point Break!

reply

Gotta revisit that scene, maybe the whole movie, been wanting to do so in a while

One has no idea how it works today or for people born in the 1980s. I did 4 years in the Army. In fact, one highly recommends it. I came out of those 4 years bigger, stronger and faster than ever before. Not to mention all the schooling I received (which instead of me paying for it, the Army paid). Plus I use the VA medical benefits to this day.

Looking back, no nothing I wanted to do forever, however, a very well spent, productive 4 years.

reply

That's what I said, I can think of many acquaintances that would benefit from this military discipline, for me at the time, studying and working, it would have been a major hassle

reply

I don't know what country you're from but in America all males at the age of 18 have to register for selective service in case of a military draft and I think your eligibility lasts until you're 26. Im glad I'm well past draft age as there's no way I'd go willingly to fight for the current assholes in charge. Knowing how close we are to WW3 Biden voters can go fight his endless and pointless wars.

reply

I managed to skip service and enter reserve. Think I can still be called until 35 or 45 (not sure)

reply

That was your mistake. You said "absolutely not."

After a year of leading E4 and below, you'd understand the B.S. ways people do exactly as you did. Nice try though.

I'm not worried about conscription. They're just playing up the "threat" level because recruiting and retention numbers suck across the world.

reply

i was joking with my son and his girlfriend over christmas that if they get drafted we will have to retire and become fun time babysitters. he's an engineer and she's a nurse. so anything is possible.

reply

That sounds like a good plan hehe
