Do you savor goose?

I mean the bird, not the ass-grab. I’ve only had it once, prepared for Thanksgiving by my Aunt Alice, a Native American. She knew how to roast it. It came out crisp, succulent and full of flavor, more interesting than the lesser poultry except perhaps for pheasant. Interested? Here is how:

My roast goose is legendary!
The only small problem is, that I like them alive too. 🤔

reply

It's one of those things, isn't it?
I love animals. Pigs, chickens, cattle, Whitetail Deer, Rabbits, all of the fish and so on are all so beautiful and yet I like to eat them as well.

reply

I feel the same.

reply

Oh yah, it is! *snivel*
In the rural area where I grew up, it was fairly common for farmers to change farms at slaughter time. Means, one farmer slaughtered the other farmer's animals.
Some tried to help themselves with a 'trick'.
"Never give your animals names if you want to eat them." 🤠

reply

That's interesting about the farmers switching livestock at slaughter time, I had never heard of this.
It makes sense as I can see a person having difficult feelings about killing a creature they had raised and gotten to know.
But yes, I have heard of never naming the animals. My cousin's family had a small homestead and kept a big pig they had named 'Fonzi' after a popular American TV character. He was a big bruiser but very clever and friendly.

I can still remember the squeals when the adult relatives dragged Fonzi across the yard behind the barn by his hind legs, one of the uncles was carrying a machete. That was over forty years ago!

For what it's worth Fonzi was delicious and everyone ate heartily.

reply

Fonzie! 💔
You see, after so many years you still remember "Fonzie".
Our mother remembered duck "Schörp" even 60 years later...ha, topped you! ☺
And she continued to eat ducks and geese too.

Edited - corrected all "Fonzi" to "Fonzie"...R.i.P. Fonzie. ♥

Fonzie the pig was a cool guy.
It was a quick strike to the back of his neck with a sharp, heavy blade.

Unpleasant but you have to eat.

reply

And Fonzie had a good life until it came to him...with a quick death.
That's how it's supposed to be.
Well, everyone has their own way of dealing with it.
Some become veggies, I stopped eating 'babies'...long before Silence of the Lambs was released. If animals sacrifice their lives for us, they should leastwise have a good life. Also means, no original Wiener Schnitzel (calf) for me.

This reminds me of a Cheers episode, where Woody’s family on the home farm had lost their pig. Everyone was very sad until the pig came home again. All the Cheers gang told Woody how happy they were for him. Woody thanked them all, returned to wiping down the bar, then muttered, “And he was DELICIOUS, with applesauce.”

Did you know the Cheers writers have stated they write their scripts as if the were writing for radio? The focus was on wit, not on cheap laughs. To me, Cheers was the only must-see thing about NBC Thursday night.

Cheers was great! ♥♥♥

And no, I didn't know that about the "writing for radio".
Interesting, and explains the really good quality. ♥

DELICIOUS, with applesauce. ☺☺☺
Hmm, never had pig with applesauce.
Apples with marjoram should be in the goose. 👩‍🍳

Now that you mention it, that makes sense. You could keep your eyes closed throughout an entire episode and still catch what was happening. Very little visual humor was used.

HELL NO!

My Pal Eddie shot a Canada Goose on a hunt once and said it was very foul tasting, he didn't like it one bit.
I've never eaten a Goose but Chicken, Turkey, Duck and the little tiny birds like Cornish Hens and Quail are very tasty.

Some people also eat pigeons. My Cuz lent his slingshot to a South American guy on a construction site in Manhattan a couple times and the dude killed and cooked up a bunch of them. The latino guys seemed to enjoy it but the American dudes stayed away and got takeout food.

And as far as game is concerned I've heard that Bear meat is consumable but the fat is not at all good tasting.

🤢

I've never had it and the only thing I've seen where people eat it is A Christmas Carol with George C. Scott. Because of that I figured it was a common thing people in England ate in the 1800s.

reply

it's very greasy like duck

reply

I tried it once. Too greasy.

reply

Yes. Goose needs to be cooked carefully.

reply

Goose is delicious! All dark meat, but tastier than the dark meat on a chicken or turkey.

But now I'm a vegetarian, and like my geese wild and flying.

reply

You silly goose.
