Do you watch women's basketball?

They're not terrible, but I cannot respect their game as long as they are given a smaller basketball. It looks rinky-dink, and really is an insult to their capabilities.

reply

No, I don’t watch it.

But WNBA players are way smaller physically than NBA players, so giving them a smaller ball to play with makes sense.

Don’t LPGA golfers play from woman tees? Same idea.

reply

The average height of a WNBA player is over 6'. Many great male stars in college and pros have been UNDER 6'. When I was in high school I watched the girl's team play very well with the same ball the boys used! So IMHO I think there is no need to demean their skills by giving them a "toy" basketball to play with. Now, if they would proportionally reduce the circumference of the hoop, I would say that now the genders face equal challenges and the achievements of the fairer sex are comparable to the men's. But they don't do that, though it could in fact easily be done with an adjustable hoop--instead they in effect give the women a crutch which they don't really need and which demeans their game.

Re golf: I don't know golf at all, but are you saying that women's tees are different from men's? It's just a stand to set the ball on--how can they alter that?

reply

WOMEN'S GOLF CLUBS ARE A THING.

reply

But tees?

reply

YUP...MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TEES ARE BOTH THINGS...AS ARE GENDER NEUTRAL TEES THESE DAYS.

reply

Not the tee you set the ball on. But the area where you drive your first shot from.

Women tee off closer to the pin than men do.

reply

That makes sense. Kowalski, on the other hand...

reply

From my quick research, the average height of a WNBA player is 5'11", while the average height of an NBA player is 6'6''. That's a pretty significant difference.

I'm sure many woman players could do well with a standard size ball, but consider, the WNBA isn't very popular as it is. Giving them a smaller ball to work with increases their ability to create exciting plays and boost scoring in games, which is what fans want to see. That should only help to grow the sport.

I think it's a good thing and personally don't see anything demeaning about it.

I USED TO...I AM A BIG BASKETBALL FAN IN GENERAL...LOS ANGELES LAKERS FOR LIFE!...THE LADIES BALL WAS A NICE COMPANION TO MY LAKERS HOOPS...I WAS A FAN OF THE SEATTLE STORM...SUE BIRD & LAUREN JACKSON WERE DYNAMITE...I LOST MY FIRE FOR THE SPORT WHEN KOBE RETIRED...AND THEN WHEN HE DIED IT WENT DORMANT...I HAVEN'T WATCHED ANY GAME IN A COUPLE YEARS.

reply

You claim to be a "big basketball fan" but the loss of one player made you lose interest? Weird! (Have you tried college bb? Far superior in "watchability," in my opinion.)

reply

MAGIC JOHNSON WAS MY CHILDHOOD...BUT KOBE WAS DRAFTED IN 1996...WHEN I STARTED HIGH SCHOOL...HE PLAYED 20 SOLID SEASONS FOR US...TAKING ME FROM HISH SCHOOL KID TO GROWN ASS MAN WITH A KID AND A RECEDING HAIRLINE...AFTER 20 YEARS RIDING WITH THAT SPECIAL MAN...I HAD A LOT OF TROUBLE ADAPTING TO ATHE REVOLVING DOOR OF OTHER DUDES...LEBRON IS GREAT...BUT HE ISN'T THE GUY TO FILL KOBE'S KICKS AND REIGNITE MY FLAMING LOVE FOR LAKER BASKETBALL.

reply

It must have been not what the girls wanted.

reply

Nope. But I don't watch sports unless it's Golf at the bar while waiting for food.

reply

I watched quite a bit of NCAA Women's Basketball last season, primarily due to one player: Caitlin Clark of Iowa. She's a lot of fun to watch play.

I don't watch the WNBA.

reply

No. Boooooring.

🥱

reply

Yes, and so is the NBA, but the point is they're giving the women a crutch they don't need. Nothing can be comparable to the men's game as long as they use the small ball.

reply

Okay then.

"Do you watch women's basketball?"

No one does.

no one asked for it, no one wants it, they're not WORTH it, thus paid way less, upsetting the "pay equality" feminazis who can go cry their own river and find out no one cares.

I would have to be mighty bored to watch basketball of any kind, especially women's. There are a couple of exceptions. The US "Dream Team" in the 1992 Olympics was fun to watch because of the novelty factor; it was almost like watching the Harlem Globetrotters vs. the Washington Generals.

Then there was the 1986 Eastern Maine high school boys class B championship game, the Dexter Tigers vs. the Rockland Tigers, which went down as one of the best high school basketball games (definitely the best one in Maine history anyway); 5 overtimes plus Kevin Edgecomb, who had been friends with my older brother since they were in elementary school, stealing the ball at one point and dunking it, which made the crowd and announcers go wild. Dunking is rare in high school basketball, at least it is in Maine and other places that have all white players:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=USDZ5Ss094g (Edgecomb's steal + dunk is at about 55:40)

I just wish the picture quality was better. About 6 years ago I emailed MPBN (PBS network here in Maine), who originally broadcast the game, to see if they still had a copy, but that led nowhere:

I've checked with the team here and we only have games going back to 2005.

I have been told that you may wish to check with Northeast Historic Film: [email protected]
Their website: http://www.oldfilm.org/content/contact-us

It also may be worth checking with the schools- they might be able to help. I'm sorry we couldn't provide what you are looking for- but I do hope this helps point you in the right direction!
