October is Squirrel Awareness Month!!!

Yes, it's that time of year again! Let's all go outside and spend a few moments celebrating and enjoying our deep-thinking, diligently-working yet always playful rodent friends. If you can spare some fruit, or a few seeds or nuts, these loveable animals would be greatly appreciate it.

Have fun, and for the next 30 days: BE AWARE!

How come there have been no killer squirrel movies?

reply

Obviously squirrels have infiltrated the highest levels of society and will not permit any negative portrayals of them in movies.

The gophers know what I'm talking about.

This guy has been called several different animals, according to Wikipedia article "Dramatic Chipmunk" it is a Prairie Dog. Prairie Dogs are ground squirrels :)

They are so cute! https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=Prairie+dog

His name is Tony, I know him from back in the day. He identifies as a gopher. He's a big Caddyshack fan.

🤣 Hahaha. Sooo dramatic!

Rodents are vermin.

I grew up near Stanford University, back when Silicon Valley didn't exist and real estate in that area was cheap. There are black squirrels there, something which seems to be unique to Palo Alto and surrounding areas, and when I was a kid the kid rumor was that some foreign squirrels had escaped from a lab and were breeding with the local gray squirrels.

They're still there, I saw one the last time I set foot in a Palo Alto city park, and I still don't know why that one place in all of California has all-black squirrels.

They are beautiful little critters, and I still have no idea if they're some sort of introduced species or a normal variation in the local squirrel population. Maybe I should read up on them one of these days.

I feel like I live on the squirrel freeway. For the past three weeks or so there has been a steady stream of squirrels scampering back and forth across the street. There are a couple of black walnut trees over there and these critters are obviously stocking up on them for the winter. I've got holes sprinkled around my backyard from them burying their nuts.

I get annoyed though, because they also crack open their nuts on my patio. Those black walnut shells leave black stains on the concrete if they get the least bit damp or wet. Grrr.
