What's Quentin Tarantino's magnum opus?

I'm gonna be asking this for some of my favorite directors. Some of them here & others on their individual boards.

Anyways, What's Tarantino's best work, for you?

Personally, it's a tie between Pulp Fiction & Reservoir Dogs. I think Pulp Fiction is the better written & more quotable film but Reservoir Dogs has the best performances.

Reservoir Dogs

The narrative sweep of PF stands it apart, its innovation. By far, imo, his most important film.

reply

I agree...very well stated. I think it's his "Magnum Opus."

I really liked "Jackie Brown" a lot also. But I think "Pulp Fiction" is the one.

reply

Never got into the kill bill stuff, but that aside, my ranking would prob. be :

Pulp Fiction
Once Upon A Time In Hollywood
Django Unchained
Jackie Brown
Reservoir Dogs

I was genuinely surprised by how "underappreciated" Jackie Brown was. It's not rated low or anything like that.

It just doesn't get enough love & doesn't get mentioned enough. It's my favorite film of his after Reservoir Dogs & Pulp Fiction.

reply

Yes...I don't even remember hearing about it when it first aired in theaters. I watched it on TV around 10 years ago and really liked it. It's such an interesting movie, IMO...some great performances in it.

reply

Great performances and a wonderful score.

reply

Reservoir Dogs for sure

reply

FOR ME PERSONALLY...JACKIE BROWN,RESERVOIR DOGS,ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD...THOSE ARE MY THREE TOP TIER FAVORITES...ALTHOUGH I LOVE ALL HIS WORK.

reply

Same. I love everything he's put out, so far. Even his "weak" films are entertaining as hell.

reply

Still Pulp Fiction. He started strong early in his career.

I think his first three are still his best three. I'd find it hard to choose between Pulp Fiction and Jackie Brown if I were forced to choose a favourite. But I might go with Pulp Fiction because it had the far greater cultural impact.

And I think Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood is probably the best film he's made since Jackie Brown.

That said, I don't think he's ever made a bad film, and most of them are really entertaining. The two I like the least are Death Proof and The Hateful 8. And I still think they're both worthwhile.

reply

I did NOT like Death Proof on my first watch but it has grown on me over the years.

reply

Yeah. I think I kind of shrugged at it first time around. But it's solid enough. I think Tarantino said something like 'If Death Proof remains my "worst film", I'll have done pretty well with my career.' And I agree with him on that.

reply

I agree with every one of your points. I've enjoyed all of his movies. He really his best movies at the beginning of his career, though.

Inglourious Basterds (2009)

But I love Jackie Brown & Reservoir Dogs too.

Pulp Fiction is OK but it doesn't WOW me as much as it did back in the day

Also, even though he didn't direct it, True Romance (1993) is the fucking shit. I love that movie. RIP Tony Scott.

reply

Pulp Fiction is one of my favorite films of all time. But hey, to each their own, Ya know...

Also, I finally watched True Romance thanks to the pandemic & lockdowns. Holds up amazingly.

Tarantino's writing, Scott's direction & the cast's fantastic performance elevates the movie.

reply

Reservoir Dogs, although Pulp Fiction is definitely a more ambitious movie.

reply

And it's also the more rewatchable film imo.

reply

Meh.
