What is the ideal movie runtime for you?

https://gobookmart.com/the-fascinating-history-and-evolution-of-movie-runtime/

Does it depend on the genre?
I like shorter movies (between 90 and 120 min), but I've found that mostly animated and horror movies fall into this category.

reply

It really does depend. 90-100 minutes is usually perfect for comedies & Animation.

While action, mysteries & thrillers are great at 2 hours.

reply

Around 1 hour and 45 minutes seems ideal for me.

reply

Same

reply

80-95 minutes, not including credits at the end.

I gravitate towards films that are around the 90 minute mark. I love the discipline involved in getting your film down to 90 minutes or shorter.

And while any film should be as long as it needs to be and not one second longer, it's also true that most films probably don't need to be longer than two hours.

Does it depend on the genre?

Possibly. I certainly think comedies should usually be shorter than dramas.

reply

Yes it does depend on the genre. Most comedies should be no longer than 1hr 40mins. As for dramas, I don't care is it's 2 hours or 4 hours.

reply

I concur 👍

I don’t mind a long historical epic but comedies, horrors and actioners should go for 90-100 minutes.

reply

I more or less agree with this too. I'm sure there are exceptions, but comedies, horrors and action films should be kept tight. This is Spinal Tap (probably my favourite comedy film) is 82 minutes. And it ain't because the stuff they left out wasn't good.

reply

Have you heard the cast commentary?

reply

The in character one? Yeah. Brilliant.

reply

Yeah, it's like a separate movie minus the visuals.

reply

2hr+ comedies is why I no longer watch Judd Apatow movies. 2.5 hours for "Funny People" (2009)? Come on.

reply

For the cinema, one and a half to two hours. These days longer than two hours puts me off going to see it and I'm more likely to wait to watch it at home. For home I'm not fussy, so long as a film justifies its runtime and doesn't feel needlessly drawn out (e.g. The Batman, which I loved, but the second half was at least ten minutes too long). Horror is a genre which I think can generally tell its stories in about an hour and a half.

I have a real pet peeve with the trailers. The last couple times I went to the theatre there were 25-30 minutes of trailers before the movie started. Give me a break, I know I’m the captive audience but show some mercy and start the show😫

reply

Good point.

90 minutes is about right, with the odd exception.

Just watched Shazam II and man, that could have used about 20 to 30 minutes of chopping.
