Most films by the Dardenne brothers.

Irreversible and A Serbian Film were both real rough ones. On the one hand I consider them both excellent pieces of work, the direction and performances were professionally perfect but hell, that was some terrible stuff.

Both films feature middle class characters so not exactly struggling financially but they are at relationship or career crossroads. Neither film ends even close to happily but they are people trying to move to the next stage gracefully and carry on. EVERYTHING goes wrong, and really terribly.

These are two expertly made movies I highly regard but I don’t suggest to friends. I have more regard for my friends.

Excellent pick. That’s quite a fine movie about a dirtbag on a collision course with his destiny, he hurts everyone he meets. Quite a performance by Pattinson!

Dumb and Dumber (1994)

Mock! Yeah! Ing! Yeah! Bird! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!

I'd say pretty much every gangster/organized crime movie. They may have their moments of the high life, but they invariably end up dead or in jail--there's not much hope that they will successfully retire, though some have.

There's an undeniable bleakness to this movie: https://moviechat.org/tt2398231/The-Homesman

Great movie!
I barely read those comics but it sure was a fine picture.

Giamatti is excellent (as usual, the guy only hits home runs) and it tells a relatable story of a frustrated working guy barely making the bills and rent. It’s very identifiable for a lot of working people.

Paul Giamatti became a star in this one.
