Director you have given the most 10/10s?

What director have you given the most 10/10s to? For me, it is Alfred Hitchcock. I have rated 8 of his films a 10/10. The 8 films are:

The Lady Vanishes (1938)
Foreign Correspondent (1940)
Rope (1948)
Strangers on a Train (1951)
Dial M for Murder (1954)
Rear Window (1954)
North by Northwest (1959)
Psycho (1960)

reply

Hayao Miyazaki

Spirited Away (2001)
Princess Mononoke (1997)
Howl's Moving Castle (2004)
The Wind Rises (2013)
My Neighbor Totoro (1988)
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984)

Second is Spielberg, third is Tarantino.

reply

Great list. Hitchcock blazed trails. What are your thoughts on Vertigo?

I don't give out 10s easily. Of the 4500+ movies I've rated on IMDb, I've only given out about 15 10s.

reply

Don't be stingy son.

I've given 50 10/10s from 1629 movies. That works out to 3% which is fair I think. 3/100 movies get full marks.

reply

37 out of 902 for me at 4%.

reply

I don't expect movies to be perfect, but a 10 for me needs a mix of being close to perfection, no scenes that bore me, great performances overall, re-watchability, memorability, and it has to make me feel something when I think about it.

reply

Just checked. It's actually 17 movies.

You don't like foreign films?

reply

I watched Z and never got it. Some of these I have never heard of. Les diaboliques (1955) might be my favorite French made movie.

reply

Le Samouraï would be easy for you to get into.

reply

I’ve only ever given 2 tens.

reply

Wizard of Oz and Asian Babes VII

reply

I wasn’t sure if certain categories were eligible for ratings 🤦‍♂️

reply

I guess if those are allowed there are lots of other 10s out there for me, I just never knew the names of the directors.

reply

That's pretty low. How many 10/10 albums?

reply

Probably about 10 or so.

reply

I'm probably at about 5. It's rare for me to like every song on an album. I got a lot of 9/10s though.

reply

Heh. 31 out of 4190 features = 0.74% over here. My rating bell curve is a bit lopsided for my liking, peaking at 7/10, but at least it’s a true bell shape. I figure I rarely would watch a movie I think I’d hate, unless in a so-bad-it’s-good context, but then those get a bump for at least making me laugh.

reply

I'm exactly like you. I won't watch a film that I don't think I'll like, but I do leave it open for movies like Troll 2.

reply

Funny; that was the film I had in my head when I was writing. Rated that 6/10. :D Full disclosure: I saw it after the documentary about it, Best Worst Movie (2009), which might have influenced my experience watching the original film. Also applies to MST3K/Rifftrax, though I tend to give those films truly bad ratings, and Rifftrax versions have a lot of their own IMDb entries.
