I just met the strangest 16-year-old girl

Since winter weather is pretty much over I took my old car for a drive around town today (I don't drive it in the winter at all). I drove to the tennis courts to see if the snow was gone from them yet, and there was a girl there by herself with a tennis racket.

She immediately came walking toward me and said, "I love your Charger!" I had to process what she said for a moment because it was such a surprise. I've had that car for ages and I'm very familiar with the type of people who tend to comment on it, and who know what kind of car it is, and it's definitely not females, let alone teenage ones.

I asked her, "How did you know what kind of car this is?" She said, "It's my favorite kind of car. It's a 1969, right?" That surprised me even more. Even guys who know what kind of car it is usually get the year wrong; usually guessing 1968 or 1970.

Then she started taking pictures of it and told me that she loves old cars, especially muscle cars, and doesn't like the way newer cars look (my sentiments exactly). She also said she has a 2002 Dodge truck that she's trying to fix up, which is a year newer than my Dodge truck that I also need to work on.

I've never known a female who was into cars, except on a very superficial level, such as, "Oh, I like Mustangs."

LOL

I doubt I'll ever run into her again, and even if I do, I'd avoid any kind of friendship with her. I could probably teach her a thing or two about working on old vehicles, and about tennis too (she said she's only been playing since last year), but too many people these days would get the wrong idea. I'm not interested in inviting trouble into my life.

Cool story. Thanks for sharing. Maybe you'll run into each other in a few years, where at least you won't feel uncomfortable talking to her.. It's too bad society now frowns on even a platonic friendship, but I understand being overly cautious.

How do you know she was 16?
People typically don't ask other people's age, and it is even less common for others to voluntarily disclose their age to strangers.

Because I asked her how old she was and she said 16. She said that she's on the high school tennis team and was there waiting for the other girls to show up. About 10 minutes later other teenage girls started showing up, which is when I left. There were about 6 or 7 of them there as I was pulling out of the parking lot, and probably more on the way.

"People typically don't ask other people's age,"

I have no qualms whatsoever about asking a kid their age, and kids don't typically have any qualms about telling their age. Age being a taboo subject is almost exclusively a 30-something-or-older woman type hang-up.

One of my daughters (early 20s) is VERY into cars. We're a BMW family and she has three! We're in the process of building her 1996 328i into a drift car. Her roll cage and racing seats just got finished and this weekend we're installing Fortune Auto coilovers and updating the rear suspension bushings to poly. Hopefully we'll be able to complete it in two days. We've already done poly motor mounts, replaced the mechanical fan with an electric one (her previous fan had a detrimental encounter with the previous radiator due to bad mounts). We've also stripped the interior and done a lot of other odds and ends. It should be ready for the track very soon.

She loves getting her hands dirty, despite being somewhat of girly girl and is great to work with. She gets after it! I've always been interested in cars and being able to share this with her has been so much fun. She's the son I never had!

She's a tiny bit less enthusiastic about working with me on my projects though, lol.

My youngest is also into it but not as much as her sister. She just did her first oil change last weekend.
