🏀 THE MARCH MADNESS NCAA Basketball Thread 🏀

Top Seeds of 68 teams participating:

#1 South: Alabama (the overall #1 seed) - #6 seed in 2022. Lost in round 1 to Notre Dame.
#1 Midwest: Houston - #5 seed in 2022. Lost in round 4 to Villanova in 2022.
#1 East: Purdue - #3 seed in 2022. Lost in round 3 to #15 St. Peter's.
#1 West: Kansas - 2022 champion.

March Madness results in millions of bracket pools in the USA. BetMGM has a $1 million prize for anyone who submits a perfect bracket. It has never happened. The best bracket gets $100,000.

Trying to pick big upsets is a challenge.

I wouldn't be surprised if there are 0 perfect brackets after today. The UVA loss to Furman (What in the world was the UVA player thinking that made the ill-fated pass late???) and the Arizona loss to Princeton were big upsets today. I sure do love this time of the year!

It's like winning the lottery.

ESPN has added a tab on its bracket pages to track the number of perfect brackets remaining. But ESPN is not offering $1 million.

There are currently 2,578 perfect brackets remaining!
20,053,675 brackets have fallen from perfection.

There has literally never been a confirmed perfect bracket.

Next year, I want to see the 68th ranked team play the 69th ranked team.

reply

They already showed them, and some of the teams playing for the two #16 seeds were awful.

The "First Four" play-in games feature four early games, (which probably pissed off the N.I.T, by eliminating them from playing in that tournament). Two games play for two #11 seeds and two games play for #16 seeds. So they aired those games on Tuesday and Wednesday night.

Jiminy Christmas! I wasn't aware of the teams playing for the 11 seeds.

I'm looking forward to watching the Big Ten teams play today. Purdue has a 7'4" center named Zach Edey, who is just so much fun to watch (He's probably going to be the "College Player Of The Year" this year). I've watched him since his freshman year and he's improved so much from when he first started. Indiana and Michigan State should be fun to watch also.

reply

Rough tournament for you. The whole conference kind of crashed and burned, even Purdue.

reply

Yes...what a terrible, terrible loss for Purdue. 2nd year in a row where Purdue has ended their season with a loss to a major underdog. Matt Painter seems like a decent guy and he's a good recruiter (especially with big men), but his coaching decisions the past couple of years have left a lot to be desired. This is what makes March Madness so compelling, though!

reply

I had Purdue losing the next game anyway. They were a weak #1 for sure.

reply

I just saw on the news that out of the 20 million or so brackets submitted, only 787 are still perfect. 🤔

reply

The rest are about to go down. Perdue down by 5 with a min left.

reply

Sorry, Mom & Dad! (They both graduated from Purdue.)

The shortest team in the tournament, Farleigh Dickenson, winner of a #16 seed from a play-in game, defeated the East region's #1 seed, Purdue 63-58, which has a 7'4" player. It is only the second time that a #16 seed has beaten a #1 seed. (#16 UMBC beat Virginia in 2018.)

During the season, #1 Purdue had beaten: Gonzaga, Duke, Marquette, Penn State, and West Virginia. They lost in the 3rd round last year, similarly upset by another high seed, St Peter's.

San Diego State is the first team to make the Sweet 16...they looked good today. Could be an interesting matchup with Alabama (provided Alabama gets by Maryland today).

This Tennessee-Duke game is a good one...lot of athleticism on both sides.

Yes...I've been really impressed with Arkansas. Kansas looked like they had command of the game at the half, but Arkansas kept battling. Eric Musselman can flat coach...they are a fun team to watch.
