It's been a long time but I think the manga (Japanese comic) of Akira that the movie is based on answers more of the details and explores some of the story further. That's what I recall from reading it back then anyway.
It's funny, the first time I saw Mullholand Drive I actually disliked it. I was coming off of Twin Peaks and I thought the story would be a little easier to follow like that TV show. Years later I finally rewatched Mulholland Drive and I actually enjoyed it way more. It is difficult to understand like some of his other stuff, but I think a lot of it is open to interpretation. I personally love that dream like quality of the film, but I also get it's not for everyone.
