Earliest movies with karaoke scenes?

After a karaoke session this past weekend I got to wondering what movies have karaoke scenes in them. Then wondered what were some of the earliest ones. Anyone know some early examples?

I can only think of modern ones right now like the hangover 3 and 500 days of summer.

Probably some 70s Japanese movies.

The first karaoke machine was developed in Japan in 1967. So it would have to be movies filmed in 1968 or later.

reply

The machine developed in 1967 but karaoke started earlier.

But does it really count as "karaoke" though without the machine? Wouldn't it simply be "singing?"

reply

I believe yes. Primitive karaoke but still karaoke.

reply

That's absurd.

reply

It’s not precisely a movie, but the first depiction of someone karaoke singing can be seen in the cave paintings in Lascaux France.

Night Train to Munich 1940

hmm thats not really karaoke though

I don't know, I Googled it and the earliest that came up was When Harry Met Sally (1989). But people were listing the best known examples, not trying to come up with the earliest.

reply

Although they were not popular until the 1990's... the parade scene in Ferris Bueller's Day Off (86) and the Top Gun bar scene (86) was probably the inspiration for clever bar owners across America to install these machines.

reply

I can't think of any from the 70s, but good topic anyway!
