What are good "fish out of water" movies?

So for those who don't know, a fish out of water story is one where someone is put in a totally foreign environment, this creates conflict, often comical conflict.

So rich person put in poor environment (or vice versa).

Teacher thrown into inner city school.

Vegas singer put in a convent (obviously sister act).

What's a good example?

I would pick Dumb and Dumber, Black Sheep, Old School and Happy Gilmore. I think the Harold & Kumar movies might qualify.

reply

Happy Gilmore is a good example.

The Little Mermaid (1989), works literally and figuratively.

Trading Places (it's all in the title)
Planet of the Apes
Borat

The entire movie isn't, but middle of Wonder Woman, when she leaves her island and ends up in the UK has some classic fish out of water type scenes.

reply

CROCODILE DUNDEE.

Big is a good one, young kid is suddenly an adult and has to make a go of it as an adult in a corporate environment. Similar premise also with 13 Going on 30.

reply

True that.

Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes (1984)

Idiocracy (2006)
Demolition Man (1993)
Back to the Future (1985)

reply

reply
