The Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise pisses me off.

A lot of franchises do this, but I'm sick of seeing it. They over complicate the timelines because they want to keep adding convenient sequels and remakes.

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974):
The original film. Oddly spelling "chainsaw" as two words.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1986):
A direct sequel the the 1974 film. A comedy/horror film.

Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1990):
A direct sequel to the 1986 film.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation (1995):
Part 4 but has the same story as the original film from 1974. The final film of the original storyline.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003):
A remake of the 1974 version.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning (2006):
A prequel to the 2003 remake.

Texas Chainsaw 3D (2013):
Ignores the 2003 remake and its sequel and is a direct sequel to the 1974 film ignoring parts 2, 3 and 4.

Leatherface (2017):
A prequel to the 1974 film, ignoring all sequels and remakes before the 2013 direct sequel of the original film.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022):
Ignores all sequels and remakes and is a direct sequel to the 1974 film.

The just want to keep dragging out the Leatherface character. The Halloween franchise does this crap too.

Agree and ditto for Halloween.

reply

I don’t disagree, Hownos made the point that Leatherface must be nearly 70 years old now and I noticed this too

We can gripe all we like, Hollywood just hears ‘ka-Ching’

And tbh, if they make another I’ll watch it

reply

And that's assuming Leatherface was in his 20s in the original film. Everyone in his family looked old at that point. I would have just preferred "Texas Chainsaw Massacre 9: Leatherface Returns".

TCM 10: The Metamucil Rampage

OLD MAN LEATHERFACE...LIVING OUT THE END OF HIS SHIT LIFE WHEN SOME FRESH MEAT SHOWS UP AND BEGS FOR A SAWING...I AM PRETTY STOKED FOR THIS RECENT ONE.

reply

Don’t get your hopes up Buddy, it’s just OK and some parts are straight up lame…It was gory fun but not much more

reply

YEAH...I WATCHED HACK THE MOVIES REVIEW A COUPLE HOURS AGO...I WILL STILL WATCH IT AT SOME POINT...BUT I AM NO LONGER EXCITED ABOUT IT...I STAND BEHIND MY EXCITEMENT FOR THE BASIC PREMISE THOUGH.

It will never end. Haven't seen one since 2003 I believe. At least what you posted nicely lays out where it falls in the timeline! They should post that at the beginning of each movie.

reply

I can only imagine how the pitch meetings go. "Okay, we're bringing the Texas Chainsaw series back. It's going to be a third sequel to the original trilogy, but we're disregarding part 2 of the original series and counting the sequel from the remake, but we're not going to count the prequel."

reply

Exactly!

THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE 2*

EASILY THE BEST BY THE WAY.

reply

But there was already the 1986 sequel. And Texas Chainsaw 3D is also part 2.

reply

THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE 2 IS THE 1986 SEQUEL....AND IT IS THE BEST!

reply

i agree. very fun movie. stretch is one of my favourite characters in any of the tcm movies.

reply

I've only seen the first one. In general though when they start to "Retcon" and you have to negate one film entirely for the new one to make sense and/or they do prequels etc I lose interest in it all. They ruined Terminator by doing that.

reply

Terminator is different though because it's all one series and time travel is involved.

reply

Can’t recall which one but you still have to negate some films for the other to make sense.

reply

The franchise is all over the place.

For all the hate remakes get, I prefer them over these new 'sequel to the original, ignoring everything else' we keep getting. At least Halloween used it to launch a new trilogy as such with the new films following each other. So whilst that franchise is all over the place the new trilogy will operate as a 4 parter with the original, having decent continuity and a continous story.

I'd prefer they just remake the first TCM film and launch a new franchise with fresh sequels. They can't really continue on from the 2022 film I don't think, it was a one-and-done film. So we're back to square one. It'll either get another remake or another 'sequel to the original' in around 5 years time I reckon.

reply

They left the latest film open for a sequel. I think we'll get that before a reboot or another sequel that disregards other films.

reply

Obviously they're financially successful or they would have stopped making them. The 1974 original cost $300,000 to make and grossed $30 million. I wonder if any actors I recognize are Chainsaw alums? It always doubles the pleasure knowing you're seeing Kevin Bacon getting killed in Friday the 13th.

reply

I’ve only seen the original. I hold it in such high regard that I’ve never bothered to see any of the sequels.

reply

It's the only one worth watching. The 2003 remake has moments.

reply

I’ll check out the trailer. 👍

reply

i think the 2003 version is legitimately pretty good. it's no replacement for the original or anything silly like that, but it's solidly paced and does a decent job of capturing the sweaty, smelly feel of the original. it's oddly lacking in gore and brutality, though, at least as i remember it.

reply

Wow! I just watched the trailer and R Lee Ermey is in it.
