Spending all your savings to not die. Selfish?

This sounds terrible but I know a woman in her 60s who has been fighting cancer for years. Now she wants to spend a fortune for some experimental treatment.

I think "you're just delaying the inevitable" and "that money could help out other people in need".

Of course, I'd never say that to her, but it's made me think, is it selfish to fight to live when the writing is on the wall?

Especially if you do your own kids out of an inheritance because you've spent all your life savings.

reply

Everyone is delaying the inevitable no matter how old they are. Even if she's in her 60s, she could live to 100 for all we know.

The answer is .... Universal Health Care for all Americans.
There are never bankruptcies in any other developed country, but backwards Republican America because people pay what is basically everyone's insurance premium to the government in the form or taxes and get their health care free at the point of service.
Their doctor still make a great living, and their research corporations still make plenty of money ... like why did all these new mRNA vaccines come from European countries?

America is backwards and hurting bad thanks to Republicans who love to inflict pain and talk about their freedom.

reply

America could never have universial health care with what hospitals and doctors charge. Everyone wants to get rich. The only way it would work would be if everyone were to cut their costs. Australia imports a lot of foreign doctors and this has lowered the costs because they need to compete with each other.

For example, I go to my local doctor and pay zero. We call this 'bulk billing" and the government pays for it. I wouldn't get so many things checked if it cost over $100 per consultation.

reply

~480 billion savings if the government can negotiate drug prices.
You're just being negative, and your facts are wrong.
Who do you think are nurses in American hospitals and nursing homes?
Have you ever been to a hospital or a nursing home?
The current system of screwing over people and driving them into bankruptcy is killing the American family and the middle class.
The expenses in American health care are 20% bloated because of insurance companies.

Luckily you don't have to worry about this issue because:

1. You clearly lack the intellectual capacity to produce anything of value that would lead to massive wealth.

2. On a related note, it is doubtful that your financial acumen would enable you to follow a path that would lead to notable wealth.

3. Your revolting, charmless personality prevents anyone from ever wanting to procreate with you.

4. There are regulations in place to prevent someone like you from ever adopting a child.

5. The woman of whom you speak is yet another figment of your imagination that you play off as real in order to impress strangers on a movie message board.

It's her money and it's absolutely nobody else's business how she spends it - including children. There is nothing I know of that says you have to leave money to your children or anyone else for that matter.

reply

That's true. But if you spend $100,000 expanding your life by a year, you had a very expensive farewell.

reply

Again - her call.

reply

It's her right to fight to survive if she can carry on. I don't think she is being selfish if she is spending her free time with relatives or other people who benefit from her presence. Most people get tired of the constant pain and struggle. Nobody should expect an inheritance but it's great if you get lucky in the end.

reply

Nobody, ever, in the history of humanity, has ever thought that their childrens' greed was more important than their own right to live.

But plenty of people have disinherited children or grandchildren who think that way.

reply

Not greed if you're poor and you need help.

reply

If you think your desire for money is more important than someone else's life, it's greed all right!
