Spending all your savings to not die. Selfish?

This sounds terrible but I know a woman in her 60s who has been fighting cancer for years. Now she wants to spend a fortune for some experimental treatment.

I think "you're just delaying the inevitable" and "that money could help out other people in need".

Of course, I'd never say that to her, but it's made me think, is it selfish to fight to live when the writing is on the wall?

Especially if you do your own kids out of an inheritance because you've spent all your life savings.

The whole point of savings is to be able to afford this very thing. Besides, were she well, she would likely not be spending the money on others, but on herself anyway in some even more "selfish" way. Also, your definition of the inevitable is quite unfair. 60 is by no means close to the end, so if the experiment should work, she'd potentially get at least another 15 years. Fighting for time is everyone's right - and it's a hell of a lot better than her giving up so someone who didn't earn the money can enjoy it.

I'd call that normal behavior.
