seems far too dour and pessimistic and cynical to me.

there are lots and lots of people who come to america or who would love to come for the opportunity it gives to people...that trite stuff like personal freedom and the ability to pursue whatever interests you have. lots and lots of people live out their lives in a satisfying way, do what they like to do, and in general have what most would describe as a very, very good life by almost any measure you could use without ever becoming rich.

that's not unique to america, but as a non-american i still think the us has a very special role in the world as a leader in personal and economic freedom.
