I'd like to take the time to call out these alleged "original" TV/movies on streaming platforms.

Here are a few movies and television shows that are claiming to be original from various streaming services:

He's All That - Already a movie

Alias Grace - Already a mini-series and based on a true story

The Mosquito Coast - Based on a novel and there was a movie

Ratched - Character from a film and based on a novel

The Baby-sitters Club - Already a film and based on a novel

Resident Evil - Based on a game and had many movies

Lost in Space - Already a movie which was based on a show

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - Radio/TV/Movie

Why do they do this? Do they think by claiming they're original that they're going to trick is into realizing there's no originality? I'd hate to create somethingonly for someone to come by and claim their reboot or remake as an original.

reply

It's a deceptive practice but they are not tricking anyone over 'a certain age'

Ratched was pretty fine nonsense if you're in the mood for murder and absurd subplots btw...it's good fun and not terribly long👍

reply

But why do they do it?

reply

You're right, it's an abomination!

You gather the town and some pitchforks and I'll get busy making torches...these bastards must pay

reply

I thought that it was because streaming services license other properties for a lot of their content. Their original products aren't original in the sense that they are creative, just that the program was either developed by them, or they are the first to air it in a region.

reply

They could add "presents" at the end. Ie: "Apple+ Presents: Gigli 2"

reply

You're using the incorrect definition of the word. The term original in this case means that it's exclusively produced/licensed in house by Netflix or whatever streaming service, not that it's necessarily the first iteration of a property or something not based on any preexisting material.

reply

Well folks, that changes everything. Let’s put the torches out and just ease back on those hammers then.

reply

Then it should be "A Netflix Exclusive" or "A Hulu Series". I don't see how any definition of "original" could justify their use.

Definition of original (Entry 1 of 2)
1: of, relating to, or constituting an origin or beginning : INITIAL
the original part of the house

2a: not secondary, derivative, or imitative
an original composition
b: being the first instance or source from which a copy, reproduction, or translation is or can be made

3: independent and creative in thought or action : INVENTIVE
an original artist
original noun

Definition of original (Entry 2 of 2)

1a: that from which a copy, reproduction, or translation is made
gave her a copy of the report and kept the original

b: a work composed firsthand
This painting is a Van Gogh original.

2a: a person of fresh initiative or inventive capacity
an original among popular pianists, combining jazz and romantic techniques in an unusually effective manner
— Douglas Watt

b: a unique or eccentric person
Among other comedians he's an original.

3archaic : the source or cause from which something arises

"The Mosquito Coast - Based on a novel and there was a movie"

great movie
who is touting it as "original" ?
are they talikmng about he movie , or some new reworking of it?

reply

They're doing a TV series. There's already a trailer. It appeared on their list of original shows coming to Apple+.

reply

"Original" doesent mean fresh new idea thats different to all the others
in this context it just means "we made this"

Though usually its still a lie when you apply that definition too

reply

It seems deceptive by saying "original". Can you imagine a band does an entire album of covers and they say "please buy our latest album of original works".
