Ever been arrested?

I've never been arrested. Couple of speeding tickets. That's all.

If you ever get arrested don't say anything. I support law enforcement but a lot of cops are assholes who are in it only to victimize people (of all races). They will twist anything to say to try to get you wrongly convicted.

^ This. Here in the USA the formula is, "I do not consent to any searches. I am going to remain silent. I want a lawyer." Your 4th, 5th, and 6th Amendment rights safeguarded in one breath. Memorize that, folks. Tattoo it to your forearms if necessary. Then if ever arrested, repeat it to anyone who tries to talk to you.

If a cop tells you to do something and you have even the slightest doubt whether or not it's an order, say, "I'm unclear on this, are you asking me to do that or are you ordering me to? If you are ordering me to, of course I will comply." (Cops will often say things like, "I need you to ___," trying to make it sound like a polite order, but in fact that is a request and so if you comply he can later say you did so voluntarily.)

Most of all, if you're arrested, convicted, and do jail time, just remember Sean Connery's take on it in Family Business (1989) -- "Anybody embarrassed about doing time is a goddamn snob. It's like a stint in the Army, it builds character. You do your time nice, don't rat anybody out, never take it in the ass, what's there to be ashamed of?"

Did you ever see that documentary about the guy who simply reported a murder in apartment next to him and they got him and several of his friends put in prison by lying to them about failing lie detector tests? They managed to get all of them to confess even one who was out of town when it happened by threatening them with the death penalty.

I found it (the documentary) https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/the-confessions/

I hadn't heard of that one, but here's a guy who got tortured by the police, not too far from where I live.

About thirty-five years ago, I got in a car accident at a traffic intersection. I was in my early twenties, looked younger than I was, and was dressed in a ratty tee-shirt and jeans. The driver of the other car was a distinguished looking man of around fifty. He, his wife, and his wife's parents were dressed up, heading to a restaurant for dinner.

The cop who arrived to handle the matter took one look at each of us and immediately decided he had seen everything he had to see. He gestured toward me and said to the other driver, "OK, I get it. How fast would you say he was going when he ran the red light?"

I said, "Whoa, wait a minute --"

"SHUT UP!" the cop roared. "I'M NOT TALKING TO YOU! UNTIL I AM TALKING TO YOU, YOU JUST STAND THERE, DON'T MOVE, AND DON'T SAY A WORD!"

The other driver said, "No, officer, you've got it wrong. I got distracted for a moment, and it's my fault. I'm the one who ran the red light."

The cop spent the rest of the time thoroughly pissed at me. I guess the stupid son of a bitch blamed me for making him look bad. It seemed to me that he was looking for some excuse to arrest me so I'd have to spend the night in jail, the usual punishment for "contempt of cop." I said as little as possible, didn't make any sudden moves, et cetera.

Since then, I acknowledge the need for police in any real world society. I'm against current efforts to defund the police. I'm grateful to the police for what they do. I'm thankful that they're willing to put their lives at risk to protect public safety. I wish them the best of success. But I do not trust the police. If they want to talk to me, I'll have my lawyer along. If anyone reading this is a cop, well, sorry but there it is.

No.

I've gotten parking tickets and 1 public intoxication/underage citation when I was 18, but never in jail.
