I read the article you linked. It doesn't mention 1986 specifically, just the 1980s. Are you getting that specific year from some other source? That really doesn't sound right to me. I got my first CD player in 1985, and when I went to the record store it was filled with vinyls and there was a small rack of CDs in the corner. When I'd buy one I'd invariably be asked by some other customer, "You have a CD player? Is the sound really as good as they say it is?"

I went through a phase in 2011 or so where I went back to vinyl. It lasted a couple of years but eventually the dang record collection was too heavy to move and I realized it wasn't worth it. At least my CDs were easier to store. Now I just stream and don't own much of anything.

Vinyl sales surpassing CDs doesn’t surprise me in the least.

For the average Joe, Streaming and none-physical digital media has taken over from CDs.

And for all the hoarders and collectors of music on a physical format, vinyl has always just had a certain appeal that you just don’t get from a CD or a cassette or a mini-disk etc.

Another thing that’s been going on for years now is record store days. Artist come out with new pressings of mostly concerts or not previously released material. I think these albums are only released on vinyl and in very short production numbers.

So on record store days, which may be only twice a year, these stores have people waiting in line hours before they open because they usually have about 30 artist contributing and only one record for from each. I’ll try to find a list of what was available on the last record store day I attended and post it.

Anything released before around 1985 I try to get on vinyl - anything after that date will be on CD.
