What did the MovieChat Nation watched this week? (02/14-02/20)

Let the Nation rise up, I mean, sit down, and watch many more movies. Now duty calls, tell me what you watched this week:

Beyond re-animator (2003 Tubi): I don’t think this is a bad movie per say but it is not a good reanimator movie. It lacks that wicked and relentless spark that made the others so zany and fun. This one seems to take itself a bit to seriously, was a bit drab at times not to say boring. The actors we’rent bad given the material they had to work with. The sexy reporter trope wasn’t too shabby either. One thing that really stood out was the soundtrack it was very Gothamesque and was even too good for the movie at times. Slightly below average movie. 5/10

Unhinged (2021 Netflix): First of all, let me say that the guy was right; she should’ve give a courtesy tap. Secondly, this movie is far-fetched but only one part really took me out of the movie; spoiler when she got those 2-3 foot stumps in the face in her mother’s house. She would’ve lay down and stayed down. For at least 10 minutes. I also wonder why Russell Crowe went through all this process when they could just have hired John Goodman and have the exact same good result. Because yes the movie was positive for me because it made me feel tensed, made my heart beat fast and kept me on the edge of my seat. But honestly I kept thinking about John Goodman and how he lost money here. Oh and the final scene was so dumb I almost took half a point off but didn’t. 7/10

Lone Ranger (2013 TV): I watched 12 Strong recently and this one was quite superior in my opinion. It was actually a perfectly entertaining movie with one major flaw; all the actors were great but I thought that my boy Mark Wahlberg was miscast. My rating: 8/10

Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015 Netflix): I bumped my rating from 7.5 to 8 because let’s be honest, this is a kick ass action movie.

This week I have started rewatching ' Upstairs, Downstairs ' (1971-75)

It's a show about the goings on at 165 Eaton Place in Belgravia, London from the early 1900's. Both with the rich Bellamy's living in luxury upstairs and their servants working in less grand surroundings downstairs.

I'm still on season one and am seven episodes in. It's a quality show and still holds up although some of the social mores are undeniably out of date and silly or quaint to modern sensibilities.

Nice, come back next week bro. 😎

I skipped last week, so I'll give the last two.

Beyond Re-Animator: 7/10
Avengers: Age of Ultron: 6/10

The Blood of a Poet (1930) - A weird movie. It was pretty inventive, but some parts were a little too weird to be great. (7/10)

Orpheus (1950) - This had very good potential. A lot of the movie was very good, but I thought it concluded very weakly. (7/10)

City of Women (1980) - I thought this was a really cool movie. It was better than I expected. (8/10)

The Testament of Dr. Mabuse (1933) - Didn't think it was as good as the first one, but good. I felt like I wasn't totally absorbing it. (7/10)

The Serpent's Egg (1977) - It's not that popular, but it was good. I thought the way it finished was cool. My fourth favorite Ingmar Bergman movie. (8/10)

Midnight Run (1988) (7/10)

Earwig and the Witch (2020) - I've been wondering if the 3D animation was the main contributor to people hating this movie, because I definitely don't think it's as horrible as people are saying. But the story left me quite unfulfilled. I found myself liking it less after finishing it, and I do think it's Ghibli's worst, though not by much. (6/10)

Judas and the Black Messiah (2021) - It was good, but dare I say I was just hoping for a little...more? I just didn't really feel the intensity that I thought I would. (7/10)

Destiny (1921) - I've been trying to watch some Fritz Lang recently, and this is basically tied with Metropolis for my favorite of his. It was done really well. (8/10)

Dead Pigs (2018) - I wish I could have liked this more. It needed more Zazie Beetz. (6/10)

Saint Maud (2019) - I had been looking forward to this for a long time, and I'm sorry to say it but it just didn't really do it for me. It wasn't much of a horror until about the last 10 minutes and it didn't really feel earned. I might try to give it another watch at some point. (6/10)

The Map of Tiny Perfect Things (2021) – Had a few good things and I’m a fan of Kathryn Newton, but it didn’t work all that well for me. I thought it wallowed a bit too much in its own misery. The reasoning for what was happening was kind of stupid. (6/10)

Anna Karenina (2012) – I was pleased with it. There may have been a couple parts that dragged a little, but it looked really cool and the style was good. (7/10)

A Royal Affair (2012) – I couldn’t quite get into this one. It’s pretty popular but I thought it was just too bland. I’m in love with Alicia Vikander but I think this was before she really blossomed. (6/10)

I See You (2019) – A good and lesser-known horror/mystery/thriller. There were some moments of really good intensity. (8/10)

Dr. No (1962) - For a long time I thought I'd never do it, but I gave in and finally took my first step into James Bond. If I see one movie in a franchise I have to see them all. I didn’t think it was great, but it was solid enough. I’ve seen two now and am looking forward to the rest of them. (7/10)

The Decoy Bride (2011) – I found this to be light and enjoyable. There were some legitimately really funny parts. (7/10)

The Merry Gentleman (2008) – It was mostly pretty interesting, but didn’t come together well at the end. (7/10)

I totally forgot I watched The Specialist. I guess Stallone's naked butt traumatized me so much I tried to erase it from my mind!😖

reply

Oh It's been way too long for me to even remember this movie... might need to see it again.

reply

Uhm, it's got Sylvester Stallone's naked butt, are you sure???

reply

It sure ain't Van Damme's but I can settle for that yes.

Last night I saw Life is Sweet (1990). It's the story of Andy, a lower middle class cook, Wendy, his shop keeper wife, and Nicola and Natalie, their odd twin daughters, who live just north of London. It's rated 7.5 on IMDb, and received mostly good reviews.

Unfortunately, I don't know if it's actually any good, because I could only understand about 25% of what they were saying due to their thick accents. Thus I only had a vague general notion of what was going on. As George Bernard Shaw (or Oscar Wilde depending on your source) once said, "England and America are two countries divided by a common language."

Andy and Wendy are both goofs, and their daughter Nicola is unhappy, frustrated and alienated. It's hinted that their other daughter Natalie is gay, or not. Their friend Aubrey is an even bigger goof. The film didn't really go anywhere or seem to have a point.

So I can't really give it a fair rating, due to the language barrier.
