Old Coins

My husband and I were going through some of his old coins today. He has two old coin books called Daily Quarter Savers that hold $5 worth of quarters. Most are from the 40's and a few from the 30's. One is from 1934 - the height of the depression. I looked up the buying power in 2020 dollars and it's just a little under $5.
It's interesting to think about the people who had that quarter during those bleak years - and what could be bought with 25 cents.

Washington quarters from their inception (1932) until 1964 were 90% silver so today they are going to be worth more than 25¢. (Not couniting any collector value.)

Yes, I know.

I have coins from my travels as well. Our first trip to Europe was in 1984 before Euros, so I have some interesting obsolete coins.

I have some with Queen Victoria on them from the 1890s. My mother saved them.

I've got a few stashed away. A couple of silver dollars from around 1890, and an 1853 penny (all USA). Also some change left over from trips to Japan and the UK, but nothing old there.

I have a shoebox with some confederate money handed down from the Civil War but I have no clue of its value.

I also have some coins from WWII that were made from alternate metals, because of shortages. These are in a plaque.
