It’s ridiculous how strong of an influence religion still has on society

We are taught from a young age to respect it and not to question it, fucking retarded. Legal and educational institutions still use it in their processes, placing your hand on a fucking bible?! And yet these idiots have the nerve to question science. I instantly lose respect for people when I find out they believe in god, I can’t help it.

I live in Kentucky, in the USA's "Bible Belt," and it's not done that way here. A person under oath is asked to "swear or affirm," no book of any kind is used, and no mention of any deity. A person who wanted to put his hand on the KJV and invoke Yahweh would be allowed to do it that way, I suppose, but the only legal requirement here is that an oath must be administered in a way that impresses upon the person taking it that he has a legal duty to tell the truth and that there are serious penalties for not doing so. The country has grown up.

Can you give an example of a present-day jurisdiction in which people taking legal oaths are required to use a Bible?

reply

The Bible is used during the swearing-in ceremony when the elected President takes the Oath of Office, but I don't know if this is mandatory. Theodore Roosevelt and John Quincy Adams did not use Bibles while taking the Oath.

reply

It's traditional, sure. But I asked for a situation in which a person is required to do it. As you established with your examples, it's not mandatory. It's also worth noting that the inaugurated President can "affirm" instead of "swear."

Good question.

Prepare to lose respect for me☹️

I've met a lot of religious people that were wonderful friends, neighbors, coworkers...some sort of faith in SOMETHING gives many people hope

Extremist types are another matter, they can piss right off

reply

Nah you’re still my boy! Sorry hope I didn’t offend you or anyone else here, I’ve just developed a distaste for how much some people try to shove it down your throat.

reply

You beat me to it Shogs!

Very nicely said.

I too have respect for people of faith who don’t use it as a tool to discriminate, exploit or attack. As a man who lives by similar ideals but does not necessarily share the beliefs, I figure it’s the least I can do 👍

reply

Well, I'm agnostic but I have no problem with someone who is religious. I still respect anybody's right to have their own faith.

reply

I instantly feel sorry for someone when I find out they don't believe in God. I can't help it.

reply

Why so bigoted?

reply

Really? REALLY??

Ok 🙄
