A guy I knew as a kid was charged with murder last week

My oldest brother phoned me at work today (something he rarely does) and asks me if I heard the news. A guy we grew up with in this small Newfoundland town was charged with second degree murder right here in Toronto. The murder occurred last December and he charged last week. I haven't seen the guy in 35 years but it does give one a strange feeling.

I suppose statistically it's easy to imagine someone we knew through school ends up a criminal.

reply

Wow, that's crazy!!! Did you ever hang out with him when you were younger??

reply

we used to play hockey and baseball together. we grew up on the same street. he was a few years younger. i ran into him a few times after we all moved to toronto.

reply

Wow, that's wild!!!

Yeah, I know the feeling, happened to me too. I went to elementary school with a guy and even hanged out with him for some time. Then, 15 years later, I open a newspaper and see a big picture of him in handcuffs and his name written in bold letters with the mention "sentenced for murder". It does feel strange.

it does indeed feel strange

I once had a co-worker I disliked and tried to avoid, even though he tried hard to be affable, something about him seemed horribly off and creepy. After a couple of years he married some young simp, moved to another state, and then I heard that the young wife had died "mysteriously". I never heard anything else, and as his name was so common googling was no help, so I never found out if she'd ben murdered or if he was a suspect, because yeah... he seemed THAT off.

No, he wasn't Moviebuff. He'd be much older.

Sorry to hear your buddy killed somebody.

One of my very close childhood friends was charged with "assault with intent to kill" a little less than 10 years ago. He basically got into a fight and stabbed the guy. He plead down and served a year in a maximum security prison. Definitely a strange feeling, but I don't hold it against him considering the circumstances that I'm not going to get into.

I don't know if you've thought of it, but have you considered reaching out to him? Guy is probably in a dark place right now and hearing from an old friend might make a world of difference.

I knew a girl who was murdered. I didn’t know her well but she dated a friend of mine. I remember just casually looking at a newspaper in a vending machine reading the headline and started walking away and then it suddenly hit me that I knew the victim.
