For someone who doesn't care about sports best game ever by Larry Bird.

Good call, crum...Bird was having so much fun that game that he was mocking the opposing teams bench, saying stuff like “watch this” and draining a 3-pointer right in front of them ....he was one of the greats...

reply

It was recommended by a Boston fan who said he is the best player of all time.

reply

Well, I wouldn't go that far, but he was one of the greats...he might not even be the best Boston Celtic of all-time, it's a very tradition-rich franchise...

reply

ID GIVE HIM TOP FIVE BOSTON PLAYERS EASILY...HE PLAYED ON THE 92 DREAM TEAM...OTHER THAN CHRISTIAN LAETNER...EVERY MAN ON THAT TEAM IS IN THE ARGUEMENT FOR GREATEST ALL TIME FOR THE FRANCHISE THEY PLAYED FOR...IT WAS AN AMAZING TIME FOR BASKETBALL.

reply

Best all around player I have ever seen.

reply

I LOVE BIRD...BUT MAGIC WAS BETTER...AND PRIME KOBE WOULD HAVE DESTROYED THEM BOTH.

reply

Magic was not better. Kobe was a better pure scorer and individual defender but Bird was a better all around player.

reply

SERIOUSLY?....KOBE IS SECOND ONLY MAYBE TO JORDAN FOR GOAT....MAGIC AND BIRD HAVE BOTH SAID SO THEMSELVES IN THE PAST,ANYBODY WHO HAS SEEN THEM ALL PLAY KNWS THAT🙄

reply

I would put Kobe somewhere around 10th or so.

reply

NO OFFENSE...THAT WOULD MY RESPECT FOR YOUR NBA OPINION AT AROUND A 2 OUT OF 10.🙂

reply

If you asked me to start team, and I could have any player who ever played, I would start with Larry Bird. Kobe would be, at best, coming off the bench. Bird was a better rebounder, shooter and passer than Kobe. Or Jordan. They were better pure scorers and individual defenders. I would choose Jordan over Kobe, too. There are a LOT of great players who are overlooked because they didn't play in the modern age and aren't fresh in our minds. I would make the case Kareem is better than Kobe. Or even Magic.

reply

I WOULD LIKE TO SEE A PRIME KOBE GO AT A PRIME BIRD...I LOVE BOTH PLAYERS...FINAL SCORE WOULD BE 43 TO 12...BIRD WAS FAR FROM A GREAT ATHLETE...KAREEM WAS GREAT,BUT STRICTLY A CENTER...KOBE WAS SPECIAL BECAUSE HE WAS A GYM COMMANDO ATHLETE WITH SKILLS AT EVERY POSITION AND STYLE OF PLAY...KOBE,JORDAN,BIRD,MAGIC,KAREEM...FIVE DISTINCT BEST PLAYERS EVER,ALL TOP TEN WITHOUT A DOUBT...I PERSONALLY PUT KOBE IN THE TOP FIVE...TOP TEN IS FAIR...IF THEY WERE TO TIME MACHINE PLAY...KOBE WOULD BE THE MVP THOUGH.

reply

Bird took on 'athletic' players all the time. And Bird was much smarter, too.

This is a tough one....neither Magic nor Bird were good individual defenders (though Bird has a few second team All-NBA defense selections because quick hands and anticipation allowed him to rack up steals)..I think Bird was a better TEAM defender because he knew how to play to the defensive principles of his team which allowed him some slack because of the above-average and versatile defensive capabilities of Parish and McHale...the showtime Lakers were good rebounders but defense wasn’t a strong suit, it was adequate- but a potent offense was where it was at, they wanted to run, using the one strength provided by Earvin Johnson that teams found challenging to defend.....Bird had a more polished shooting game; Magic was more proficient in getting others involved, though Bird wasn’t too bad at that either...Johnson’s worth to his team was arguably greater than Bird’s simply because the offense ran through him and, most importantly, Magic just made everyone on the floor better— the classic case study in that is this: James Worthy was a good player, a solid forward with a quick spin move, sharp first step, a wicked finger roll and could run out on the wing for Magic...however, Worthy is just another good player without Magic; with Magic, Worthy is the Hall of Famer he is today...it’s a tough comparison, both do different things well, some things better than the other....I think Bird is the greatest NBA player ever to get the most out of very average athletic ability; The Hick from French Lick admitted us much, hearing it plenty that he “can’t run, can’t jump, slow feet.”—which makes his accomplishments all the more impressive....Magic Johnson, IMHO, is the greatest team player in NBA history, through skill, great vision of the court, great leadership qualities , and an emotional spirit that drove his team to greatness.....like I said, tough one, athletes like to settle it with the scoreboard of rings, and we know who has the advantage there...I’m not as rigid, and I grew up in L.A. during the 80s, so my biases may come into play, but I’m a fair man....despite this long rant, I can’t decide who’s “better”....

Pretty good analysis. Magic was an awful defender, despite having Michael Cooper and Byron Scott always defending the better player. But I'll have to disagree about bird being a good defender regardless of awards. if you watch a lot of the games you'll see he did what Allen Iverson would later do, constantly leaving his man to intercept the ball. Bird could do that because they had many great defenders, especially Dennis Johnson and Kevin McHale who I think were probably the best at their position defensively. Kevin was also the best post player, but James Worthy was an excellent college and professional basketball player who was a pretty good defender, came up big in those big games, didn't have the flash's game and was probably overshadowed by magic and Kareem.

I also don't like comparing different eras, so I'll just compare what I've watched. In the last 30 years I would say LeBron James is the greatest basketball player ever. And I had a lot of doubts at first, especially considering all the attention he had in high school. I didn't like the decision but that guy has done more with less. He plays the game the right way.

Bird was definitely one of the smartest players of his time. must have been nice to have Bill Walton coming off the bench. That guy was a genius of a player and probably could have been considered one of the greatest centers of all time if he didn't have all those injuries.

reply

Just to be clear, I wasn’t suggesting Bird was a good defender, only that he picked up a few All-NBA Defense second team nods because of an above-average amount of steals he accumulated, which is easier to do when you’re allowed to take chances because you have Parish and McHale behind you...after Tiny Archibald’s exit, with the regular lineup of DJ, Ainge, Parish and McHale, Bird was definitely the worst defender of the starting five....hell, even little 6-1 Jerry Sichting was a better defender, as evidenced by his face defending a right hand from the 7-3 Ralph Sampson in a Finals game, but I digress....

I didn't watch them play in the 80ties except on highlights and some games on YouTube but I would say that both Bird and Magic are kind of overrated when it comes to individual skill just because they dominated 80ties. They had the best teams in the 80ties. Jordan had the best stats of his career in the 80ties, better than any player from that era until now but he could not win because he was the lone star before he got a good team later on. Same goes for some other players like Barkley, Stockton, Hakeem and so on they all had great stats but no team. Both Bird and Johnson had at least two other hall of fame all stars playing along side so that kind of makes things easier. Basketball evolves constantly and players add to their moves, physical condition and so on. Kobe is absolutely more skilled than either of them and so was Jordan.

(Cont.)
Both are in the top 50, as decided by the experts for the league’s 50th anniversary in 1996, and deservedly so...lastly, both respected the other’s game and each other after their careers ended...again, it’s tough, all depends on preference, what you value, and to some degree, bias....I’ll just say it was the greatest individual one-on-one rivalry in NBA history, and I’m glad I was there to witness it

(Yes, better than Russell v Chamberlain....11 to 2, come on, man)

reply

KOBE>MAGIC>BIRD.🤫

reply

I won’t get into that argument...different eras, different games, different defensive rules (hand checking), different offensive and defensive schemes league wide in those different eras....

And Magic is a gracious diplomat when he compares himself to Bryant...too gracious...

reply

MAGIC WAS MY GUY AS A KID AND KOBE AS AN ADULT...I LOVE BOTH EQUALLY...KOBE WAS JUST THE MORE COMPLETE PLAYER...ONLY THING HE COULDNT DO BETTER THAN ANYONE ON THE FLOOR AT ANY TIME WOULD BE PLAY CENTER.

I’d add that you can’t discount one important quality, especially for a tight-knit team sport such as basketball: leadership....Bryant was a good leader; Earvin Johnson was a GREAT leader...each went about leading the team in starkly different ways....with Bryant, it was more by example than vocal- when it was voiced it was like “get on board, or FUCK OFF”....with Johnson, the leadership was intense, but more cultivating and not quite as harsh, his role was to make players better, to put them in a position to succeed with him at the point, building a court chemistry derived from trust and encouragement (exceptions were Kareem and Norm Nixon, two veterans already established and who clashed with Johnson at times for various reasons; he was also hard on Vlade Divac, but it was late in his career and time was running out along with patience)....with all due respect to the late Bryant, he made the team better without a doubt, but he never really made an individual player better; you were what you were when you arrived with the Lakers and hopefully it fit with Bryant’s game (Gasol the perfect example)....Johnson made his team better and made players better (Worthy, as mentioned in this thread, Byron Scott to a large degree, the workmanlike A.C. Green to a very serviceable degree)

I don’t discount anything you say, brother Kowalski, these type of comparisons are tough, they make me go on long paragraph spiels trying to find an answer, and I usually fall short...basically, they’re both great players, but totally different in terms of style of play...I certainly appreciate both and enjoyed watching each of them play for their entire careers...

VLADE HUGGING MAGIC IS LASER SCRIBED INTO MY BRAIN...I LOVED THOSE YEARS...I WILL ADD AS FAR AS KOBE...THE MAN HAD THE ABILITY TO BE A MAGIC TYPE PLAYER...I REMEMBER THE GAME HE WAS BASHED FOR NOT PASSING SO HE CAME OUT THE NEXT NIGHT AND RACKED UP ASSISSTS IN THE TEENS,ALMOST DARING PEOPLE TO CALL HIM ON NOT SHOOTING...I HONESTLY THINK KOBE WAS TOO GOOD AND KNEW HE WAS TOO GOOD TO BE THE GREAT FACILITATER THAT MAGIC WAS AND NOT THE WALKING BUCKET JORDAN WAS.

reply

there weren't many 3-pointers in there, either
