Are poor Americans really just incompetent idiots?

So here's why I ask: A friend of a friend moved to America from Serbia some 10 years ago. He barely knew the language at first and got a job as a truck driver. Now he has his own trucking company worth millions. And he said that you literally have to be an idiot not to succeed in America.

And his success story is not the only one I know. As a matter of fact, I don't know a single story of someone from here going to America and not succeeding, at least in relative terms. I know a guy who was literally mentally impaired, didn't even finish elementary school, moved to NY, worked there as a taxi driver, saved some money and came back as a rich man.

Then there are plenty of celebrity examples one of which is a famous artist in my country who's brother is friends with my dad. The guy illegally moved to America in the late 80s, worked first as a bouncer, then as a bodyguard only to later find himself in photography and sculpting, became a millionare, hung out with hollywood celebrities.

Tommy Wiseau, the director of The Room. Not really the sharpest tool in the shed, and yet he already got rich before making his movie and despite his movie being the worst thing ever, it payed off.

But the American perspective seems to be quite different. People having the privilege of being born in it constantly complain about the economic inequality and claim that it's impossible for them to succeed due to being born poor or even due to their skin color. So how can I from my perspective draw any other conclusion than that Americans, black or white, are simply spoiled, and when a hard working humble person from a country where life is truly hard comes there he does what it takes to succeed because he knows how much worse it can be.

Most poor people have given up and won't try. They tend to stay in their own countries and are resigned to their fate.

You're comparing immigrants with ALL Americans including the poor who have given up. Immigrants tend to want a better life and are more motivated to have one in a new country. They are the creme of the creme. For instance, Indian immigrants do very well. They tend to be better educated, middle-class backgrounds and more ambitious than those left behind in India where poverty exists.

Different skill sets are needed to move up. It's not just about working hard. A seamstress can work 12 hours 6-days ea. week, but remain in poverty. Learning new skills may not be available or they may not be aware of them. Being poor, middle-class and rich require different skills.

Don't underestimate discrimination! Those doors are nailed shut if you're not the "right" gender, race, religion, age, etc.

Finally, not all immigrants become rich. There are many who struggle and will remain poor stuck in dead-end jobs. But, they're hoping their children will live the American dream.

Ok, I agree with most of it but this? Really? Literally what doors are nailed shot with today's diversity quotas in education and many companies? I'd agree if you sad that blacks on average have it harder because of their average socioeconomic status, but that doors are shut down for you if you're individual of a certain race or gender, I just don't see the evidence for it.
However if you're a foreigner with a hard accent and/or not even fluid in english, many doors are closed.

Discrimination was and is rampant in my former profession. Not just racial. Multiple groups. An attitude exists that only a specific type should be hired. I finally gave up even though I had a degree and wanted to be in the profession since I was a kid.

Even in my new profession, there is rampant discrimination that takes different forms depending on the county. I overheard an office head brag about how people love working for him even in their low titles as he referred to someone to whom he had recently discriminated re: a promotion. He only wanted his ethnic group promoted. I left that place.

I become boiling mad at people like you who try to tell me what I have experienced.

BTW, it is racist for a white person to tell a black person that there is no racism. Ditto gender, religion, sexual orientation, etc.

reply

Can you say what profession please?
I don't identify with the white race btw.

reply

I'd rather not. It doesn't matter since it's the same in multiple professions.

Academy of Motion Pictures:
In 2012, the Los Angeles Times surveyed some 5,000 Academy members and discovered that 93 percent were white, 76 percent were male and the average age was 63 years old.

That lack of diversity influenced who won awards. They are attempting to change.

The lack of awareness re: discrimination is astounding. I watch news from France where demonstrations against police racism are ongoing. Police deny racism, but there’s not one nonwhite cop among groups of hundreds and practically no females.

reply

These statistics mean nothing if the question is whether you, the individual are prevented from succeeding in life solely based on your race and gender. The reason why there are less women in the police (everywhere in the wold) is especially obvious. For reasons on why the academy (one of the most fiercely liberal group of people in the world) is majority white I won't bother going into, but there always seems to be an answer that isn't racism or sexism. Less women pick certain professions due to biological and cultural reasons. Less black people get into cinematography, possibly because they're poorer and art isn't the first choice for people living in poverty. I could go on and on, but the point is that I've seen no evidence that racial minorities being rejected based on their skin color is this rampant thing in the US.

And even if there is some racial discrimination, there's no way your average african american is at more of a disadvantage than a pale slav with terrible accent and from a different culture.

As for your example, you might as well be lying since you won't even say what field you're talking about. And if it's true, it only shows there are singular cases of petty racists in management positions here and there.

reply

You're in denial. You're part of the problem. Black Lives Matter.

reply

You see why I don't believe you? You say nothing concrete. Your entire reply is just buzzwords and a mantra that might as well be posted by a chat bot. I'm part of which problem of yours exactly? I have literally nothing to do with your country and its stupid politics.

You could have shed some honest light on your situation and maybe I'd be like holy shit it's real. But no, you're sitting there living your privileged little American life that 95% of the world can only envy you on and whine about not getting a promotion on your job that probably pays more weekly than an average Indian earns in a year.

reply

You already stated you refuse to believe anything I wrote, therefore your mind is closed and I decided to move on. Stay ignorant.

reply

Only after you refused to write anything meaningful and started throwing funny statistics. Like booo hooo, there are only x percent of people sharing your skin color in the fricking Academy of Motion Pictures, I'll have the world's smallest violin play just for your tragic life.

reply

No, I’d say we’re all incompetent idiots. Money doesn’t seem to help.

reply

I guess Serbs are superior. They are great at promoting peace and stopping Covid...oh wait.

reply

They definitely aren't any worse at it than Americans.

reply

And tennis. 😁

reply

I think that my response would be

Your friend's friend ended up owning the company. Do you think that those who work for him are millionaires? I'm guessing probably not. That's because the system allows those at the top to get rich off of those who work for them and are underpaid.
When self driving trucks take over the transport industry completely, ONLY the owner is going to make any money.

For every friend of a friend who makes millions, there are 100s more who are taken advantage of by only being able to get minimum paying job.

reply

I'm poor. Im a complete idiot at making money. But i just don't care enough to change.
