Are you a quartz, mechanical or smart watch wearer?

I’ve never had a smart watch.

I have some very nice quartz movement and a few replica Swiss watches which are mechanical.

Personally I prefer quartz. Set the time and leave it. No need to wind or shake or buy a machine to keep it moving (costing hundreds.)

Plus mechanical watches need to be serviced every five years and it costs around $500.

I like the craftsmanship of mechanical watches but I don’t find them practical or cost efficient.

I carry a phone.

I feel naked without a watch on my wrist when I go out.

They've never felt comfortable.

I used to wear an Apple Watch, but then I made the switch to an Android phone.

I don't wear a watch anymore.

I used to wear no watch, but now it's a Samsung smartwatch. It's quite helpful.

~$500 for a cleaning? I doubt that highly. About 7 years ago I had my mechanical Hamilton from the early 1970s (https://i.imgur.com/zGzOAPA.jpg) cleaned and repaired (it had fallen onto a concrete floor and dislodged one of the jewels) for $50 (he also replaced the old scratched-up crystal with a new one, though not an expensive one), and I doubt prices have risen that drastically since then. I don't doubt you can find people who would charge $500, but they are ripping you off.

After he cleaned and repaired it, it kept great time for several years, but now it's losing probably 30 seconds a day, so it's due for another cleaning I suppose.

Well it depends. $800 is average for a a Rolex according to googles first result.

Rolex has an artificially high price to begin with. Maybe if you could find out what it cost for routine servicing of a Rolex in the 1950s or earlier before they were comically overpriced, and then adjusted that for inflation, it would be reasonable. But now Rolex is like Prada or Gucci or any other "status symbol" brand where the price is as high as it is specifically because they want it to be a status symbol.

In any case, any competent watch repair guy can do a routine servicing of a Rolex just as easily as with any other brand, so you're still getting ripped off if you pay several hundred dollars going through official Rolex channels. It's like paying $3,000 for a tuneup at at authorized Ferrari dealership, when any competent mechanic could do it for $100 or less.

I own quartz and mechanical. Quartz is more convenient. But mechanical has its advantages as well: never need to replace a battery. Yes, overhauls can be costly, but with a little luck you will be able to go longer, sometimes much longer, than 5 years without one. I do not use a watch winder for my automatic. I just wind it myself if it hasn't been worn in a while.

Breitling for me.

Nice. I’ve tried on a few. The store in Las Vegas was great. Even though the salesman knew that me and my friend weren’t going to buy one, he was happy chatting and talking about them.
