Most dissapointing movies of the year?

What movies that you were looking forward to turned out to be the most dissapointing?

For me:

It part 2 - loved the first one but this one didn't do it for me.

The Irishman - Great director, great actors but it didn't have the same energy as some of my Scorsese favourites, too slow for me.

Ad Astra - this was propably my most anticipated movie of the year. I love scifi like this and the trailer was great. Movie turned out to be not so great.

None of these were bad movies but I expected them to be much better, I'll give them another watch sometime later with lower expectations.

john wick 3, perhaps. not that i thought it was bad - far from it - but i felt it had a bit too much padding & talk about tables & medallions or whatever that stuff is, and that made a film that could have been one of the great, lean, fun action movies of all time into something that was just quite good.

doctor sleep - i have genuinely liked/loved almost every film mike flanagan has made, but i found this devoid of atmosphere, clumsily plotted & really a bit of a bore. can't wait to see what he does next, though.

it pt 2 - i liked it more than most, maybe, but it's undeniably overstuffed & shambolic & far far far too long.

Oh yeah Wick 3 was dissapointing for me too. I liked it but I feel like these have gotten worse with each entry. Sometimes less is more. I doubt this series will ever top the first one for me, but Keanu Reeves is amazing as John Wick so I'll gladly watch every sequel they will make.

reply

less is more, absolutely. i'll take focused & lean action over elaborate ambition (relatively ambitious in this case, anyway) almost every time.

Lucy in the Sky (2019)

Joker takes first place in this category. The movie was full of acting. There was absolutely no cgi or explosions. Trash movie!

reply

You may be Joking but I agree with you.

reply

Just watched it recently and I don't understand the big deal. A really pointless film.

reply

So you’re not a fan of the comics. This movie should interest anyone who is even slightly interested in the Batman Joker story line. No one really knows where Joker came from, i accept this story.

reply

Nope not a comic book fan. Although a better back story would have been appreciated. He gets beaten by poor street kids then acquires a gun and when beaten on the train by men he shoots them. All good but this makes him a hero for the class struggle? It would seem to me that it was the poor who pushed into homicide in the first place.

I guess I would just expect a lot more depth from a complicated character.

reply

He isn’t a hero. He’s always been a super villain. He is no different then a kid that walks into a school and starts shooting. An overly sensitive nerd with no balls who can’t handle the pressures of society. He is basically the first millennial.

reply

And that is ok I guess as a villain in a film that revolves around the hero. As the main character though in a film without any hero at all I found it empty and pointless. They didn't have to make him sympathetic just a little deeper maybe.

But yeah as you say he is just broken.

reply

Dark Fate - it could have been so good. Such a major disappointment.

reply

The Professor and the Madman - I love movies based on real people but this movie sucked

reply

A film about the dictionary will only ever be so exciting. I thought it was ok but nothing brilliant.

reply

I'll watch anything with Mel Gibson. I need to see this.

reply

Missed opportunity, IMO.

Sean Penn's acting is the most overwrought I've seen him perform, Gibson a bit also.

reply

Have you seen Dragged Across Concrete?

reply

Joker - Found it boring and nonsensical I guess that may have been the point but it was just flat for me. I think that anyone who plays the Joker now is seen as some kind of hero because Ledger is thought to have gone off the rails due to it so people just rant about the performances and film no matter what.

The Beach Bum
Alita: Battle Angel
Dark Phoenix
Hustlers
Ma

reply

I really liked the Beach Bum, I expected nothing and I got everything.. and nothing, it was fun :D
