Are you ever surprised by celebrities people have never heard of?

My best friend didn’t know who Michael Caine, Gene Hackman, Martin Scorsese, Charles Bronson, Michael Mann, David Mamet, Aaron Sorkin were.

reply

No surprise. I have come across younger people who had never heard of John Lennon or Paul McCartney.

I remember back in 1986 when Ferris Bueller came out some on MTV saying their favorite new band was The Beatles.

About ten years ago a friend of mine got angry because I said to him “you know who George and Gracie are” and he didn’t know who they were and thought I was being presumptuous by assuming he would know who they were. I was born in ‘65 and he was born in ‘62 so I can see him not knowing who Gracie was because she died relatively young but I was surprised he couldn’t guess who George was.

reply

No.

I know them (except Aaron), but I don't know most celebrities from my lifetime.

reply

I knew almost everyone when I was a kid and a teenager and that includes era's before my time (my mother was good about introducing me to old movies and old movie stars).

Now there's tons of people I haven't a clue who they are; particularly if they're from broadcast television or reality shows. And current musicians? Forget it..I can't keep up.

But any true film aficionado will delve into the past. It's sad when some people think nothing meaningful happened before they were born.

reply

Nothing strange here

reply

I agree. Does not seem strange at all.

reply

Martin Scorcese and Michael Caine are still very big names today.
