Ever been cyber scammed?

I found out this week that someone used my credit card details fraudulently. Luckily my bank is pretty on to it and froze my account before I even contacted them, but it's such a massive pain in the arse, having to order a new card, stop all my direct payments and change the account for each... all for some arsehole nerd grabbing my details from a supposedly protected internet site and taking $58 for "escort services". I ask you, what sort of escort service charges only $58? I don't want to even think about what you'd get for that or who would be giving it to you...

I'll get the money back, but that's hardly the point. Nothing feels safe and secure these days, even when you're careful about what sites you use this shit can still go down. Once bitten for me, I'll never give my card details out online again.

It's funny you should ask that. I got a phone call from a scammer yesterday informing me that my internet connection would be cut off in 24 hours and to press 1 to talk to a "technician". So I pressed 1 and aggressively said hello when the call went through because I was in the mood to tear them a new one. But the bastard hung up one me without saying a word.

Yes, and I have no idea how it happened, as it was a debit card that I only use offline that got hit. I am guessing I was hit by one of those ATM skimmers or something, as I hadn't lost the card and have never used it online. I was lucky because my bank caught on immediately. The scammer tried testing my card at Apple, then tried spending over $200 at Target and various other places. My bank knew this was fraudulent and notified me as soon as it happened.

One day, cyber security is going to be so insecure that we will go back to using cash for most of the time. I am almost there already. I used to use my debit card 90% of the time. Now it's 30%.

Once back in late 90's. We got hit by the "Your AOL is being cancelled". My wife worked for the bank so was notified about the fraudulent transactions almost as soon as they hit the account and had them stopped before any were finalized, some literally within minutes. She stopped it cold and didn't cost us a dime. A few weeks later it hit the news about how much these people had made off that con.

Yup. Someone had a nice night at an NYC hotel on me a few years back. Bank refunded my money, but I was still pissed.

As for buying things online. I still think its overall pretty safe. There's probably more risk with card skimmers at gas pumps or ATM machines.

I've had just one episode a few years ago where someone, somehow, got my credit card info. They tried to buy something in California. Actually, they tried a couple of times. I saw the charges early since I check my account almost every day. I called my bank and they canceled the card immediately and reversed the charges that were pending on my account. I still had to file an affidavit stating the charges weren't mine, even though it was pretty obvious since I was about 1800 miles away at the time. But I get it - they need documentation. It was about $700 worth of charges. I have a debit card but have used it about three times in all the years I've had it. Credit cards are safer than debit cards.
