Did or do you have student loan debt?

I owed $5000.00 back in 1986. It seemed like small fortune back then.

reply

The only student debt I ever had was short term loans that were used to pay tuition before other financial aid came in. I really got by just on Pell grants and college work study.

reply

I paid off my first degree which was 8k by 2000, when I went back to school in 2004 tuition was more than double what it had been and those loans were about 30k, which I still owe about 7k on.

My grandson is 31 and still owes 18K for a B.A. in Pre-Law.

did he ever go to law school?

reply

He didn’t have the funds. He had a scholarship to continue, but became very ill and was hospitalized. The result was he lost his scholarship. He later learned after the fact he could have had a tutor to keep him going! He currently is working for his certificate in teaching. Once he obtains that and working full time (he’s a substitute while working his part time job) his goal is to gain his Masters.

Poor kid (he’s still a kid to us) has had 2 hernia surgeries plus we had 4 hurricanes in 2004, 3 hit us directly. Due to those storms without us knowing....his bedroom walls developed black mold. He ended up with black mold in his lungs so again was hospitalized for over a week.

reply

I hope he is doing better and all the best to him.

reply

Thanks, hownos. I appreciate your empathy. He’s currently having more tests.....it may be the nasty hernia raising its ugly head again!

reply

Did he lose his interest in law school? I’m sure there are other scholarships available to him.

reply

At his age if there are scholarships available they are minuscule. If he teaches full time he will have good benefits, plus full time pay which will permit him to take online courses. Several years ago (with tongue in cheek) I told him to renounce his US citizenship, become a citizen of Mexico, cross the border illegally and he would get everything he needs from health insurance, driver’s license, to college tuition! 😉

My friend’s 40 year old daughter just received her Masters in Business Administration. She took online courses plus one day a month on campus at the University of Florida in Gainesville, FL. The cost $60,000.00!

reply

I went to the University of Florida. I really liked living in Gainesville.

He received his BA from UCF one of the most expensive in Florida.

reply

No. Recently community colleges became free.

reply

not in canada.

reply

I paid mine off while working at a convenience store. LOL.

reply

well done.

reply

Nope never. Saved a fortune. I know (mostly) women who have huge student loans from doing course to course etc. Then they get all worried and try and do crazy stuff like trying to find a sugar daddy. One woman did law only to find out it's hard to get into so did psychology another hard to find work in field. So she works day care now. She could have saved herself a lot of time and money and just went into day care to begin with.

reply

I think someone needs a PhD to make a living as a psychologist. I don’t think a bachelor or master degree is marketable.

reply

Yes, but thankfully it's less than half of what it was when I graduated. I left college owing $17,000, which isn't bad all things considered; I managed to get several scholarships and grants, and I was able to commute so I didn't have to worry about room and board being tacked on. I had to defer my payments for a year when I bought my house, and then again last year due mainly to medical bills, but I've gotten it down to a little over $6,000 and I'll start paying on it next year.

reply

Good work and hope you are feeling better.
