Super-Talented Not Appreciated

Movies, music, comedy, etc.. Someone who could have been on top, but for whatever reason, people stopped paying attention to them, even though they are just as talented, and/or still releasing material that is just as good as it was before. Or it could be someone like Van Gogh. Or it could be someone who has a cult audience, and you're thinking, "If this person was given a chance for a huge audience, they'd be so popular and respected"

Timothy Spall, Brilliant actor. All the way back to Auf Wiedersehen Pet and beyond.

reply

Yeah, he was in a few really good movies directed by Mike Leigh... Spall mentioned that he's been passed up because he lost weight.

reply

Yep I read that somewhere too about his weight etc, He's a top actor plus a genuinely down to Earth guy as well.

reply

Weight loss can be an odd thing. Although it means you are healthier (supposedly) it tends to make the person look sickly. John Goodman is another good example of this.

reply

I was going to mention Goodman, Yep they look ill without the usual weight on that we're used to seeing.

reply

There are a troupe of great character actors that appear in several Mike Leigh films. Imelda Staunton is another stand out but I think she gets appreciation and recognition as a stage actress and Harry Potter film alum.

Vera Drake

I agree with that and I think it has a lot to do with the way he looks. If he was good looking he could be a real threat to the kind of roles Johnny Depp does. I always saw him as being perfect for the Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland which Depp ended up playing.

I think Michael Fassbender is capable of great things still to come.
Doug Stanhope seems to finally be getting the attention he deserves. That dude’s hilarious.

For me, it's character actors like Alan Ruck (Forrest Bueller's Day Off), Leland Orser (Star Trek, ER), Lili Taylor (I Shot Andy Warhol), Lori Petty (Tank Girl) and Karl Urban (Almost Human, Star Trek), especially Urban. I am really shocked as hell that dropped off the face of the earth. He was not only the only actor who embodied his character in the new Star Trek reboot, he has amazing onscreen presence. He was amazing in Almost Human. He's just too talented for Hollywood, I guess.

In terms of music, Julian Lennon, Digable Planets, The Wiseguys, Chumbawumba and Portishead. Lennon was overlooked for no Goddamned good reason that I can think of. The other acts were overlooked because they were overshadowed by more popular acts, weren't what the suits were looking to promote or disappointed listeners when the rest of their album didn't sound like the hit song that made them famous.

reply

I think most thought "Oh, it's John's son" and dismissed it before giving it a chance. I've only heard a couple of songs of his.

reply

he should have changed his name

reply

Digable Planets, agree. Good call.

reply

Did you watch The Boys? I thought Urban was great in it.

reply

No, I didn't, but I wouldn't be surprised if he was not only great, but the best thing in it.

reply

I do disagree that he dropped off the face of the earth. He was in all the new Star Trek movies and was in Thor:Ragnarok. I do agree that he's awesome and should probably get more recognition than he currently does, but I think he's been in some high profile shows.

Nicky Katt, great actor.

I actually like Justin Timberlake as an actor more than as a singer. I feel he was severely underappreciated as an actor.
