Am I the only one who is sick and tired of watching movies/tv series depicting supernatural or impossible events?

I feel as if 90% of the movies and TV shows are super sci-fi or just way too exaggerated.
Star Wars, Avengers, Avtar, IT, Fast and Furious, Twilight, Stranger Things, Game of Thrones, Walking Dead.

I know they are fiction and fiction could be anything the writer wants it to be. But I want fiction to be realistic. Things like that don't happen in real life. I want to watch stories that are realistic and relate-able as a human. Or may be I am just looking at wrong recommendation lists.

reply

Yes.

reply

That's your problem. You're looking at recommendation lists instead of exploring on your own. I would avoid "critically-acclaimed" films in particular. Anything the critics cheer about is always bound to be a crappy film. Look for stuff the viewers give high points to instead.

I get recommendations all the time that I refuse to look at because I know what they're trying to push at me on YouTube and Netflix, and a lot of it is crap.

reply

Have seen viewers rating for star wars and avengers?

reply

Just because a lot of people like them, doesn't mean they're good. Just ask the people on that thread about popular movies that everyone likes, but a few hate.

reply

Worst are those type of movies with heroes who are unrealistically powerful like a Jurassic Park movie with a little girl easily running and jumping on a rain-soaked roof or hobbits easily running from an angry dragon.

If you're looking for realistic dramas with a true plot instead of formulaic science-fiction, action-adventure or fantasy movies then you'll have to watch films with limited releases, old films or foreign films especially British films.

Some realistic current dramas/comedies are The Farewell, Edie, Downton Abbey, This is Us, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Unbelievable, The Irishman

They're out there. You just have to search yourself instead of looking at lists.

reply

Just checked out the trailers of The Farewell and This is Us. They look really good. Why is it that I can't find The Farewell anywhere online?

reply

it's a movie in theaters now

reply

You have to start This Is Us series from the beginning in order for it to make sense.

I thought you were looking mainly for theatrical films. Online realistic films and TV shows are easy for me to find. "The Bodyguard" British series was excellent and very realistic.

The Farewell is mainly in Chinese.

PBS is a good source for drama too.

reply

Its only been 3 hours that you suggested this is us and I have already watched first two episodes. This goood! Thank you for recommending it to me .

reply

That was fast. Enjoy!

reply

it depends on what the film or show is trying to convey. any approach can be used -- in an artistic way -- to pose an interesting question or present a compelling theme. on the other side, a "realistic" film/show can be boring when it doesn't do those things effectively. for me, that's the razor. Most of what you list above doesn't make the cut for me either but it has nothing to do with their lack of realism or naturalism.

I avoid just about all superhero/action movies. Just my personal preference, but i cannot stand all those Spiderman, Ironman type movies. I like stories about characters who walk and talk like real people. I've been in a room with people watching those movies and i want to ask them, 'What the freak is this movie ABOUT?' ha I especially detest those stupid Harry Potter movies. lol Sorry, but that woman (forget her name) is the luckiest author alive to convince millions of people to actually enjoy those boring stories.

Those movies bore the h#ll out of me. I prefer intelligent, realistic dialogue. I am also partial to older comedies like Annie Hall, My Cousin Vinny, etc. I like legal dramas like those made from John Grisham's books.

All the movies in my collection are at least twenty years old. That last two films that I actually saw in the theater in the last ten years were the first two Planet of the Apes films. That was only because my sister desperately wanted to see them and no one else would go with her. They actually were fairly enjoyable. But then again, I liked the original with Charlton Heston.

reply

" I prefer intelligent, realistic dialogue.".. that is me! I crave for such movies.
And also My cousin Vinny is on my top 5 movie list.
To be honest I do enjoy supernatural/superhero movies but come on that is all there is nowadays. There are more superheros now then there are people.

reply

robocop2019- Actually now that I think about it, maybe My Cousin Vinny isn't exactly realistic. haha Who is that funny all the time? But I love that movie.

I love to laugh and I especially enjoy witty, sparkling dialogue like what you find in Neil Simon films such as "The Odd Couple". That movie makes me laugh so hard. I also have "Biloxi Blues". It's hilarious.

i enjoy a good comedy. I also like thoughtful films like other Woody Allen films, "Hannah and Her Sisters"and "Crimes and Misdemeanors".

Of course you can't trust my taste ALL the time since I loved "Ishtar". I thought it was very funny.

I also like supernatural films like the older one with Nicole Kidman, "The Others". I like scary movies that are subtle and not too "in your face" with horror. But I also own all four Scream movies, so my taste is all over the place! ha

reply

Not to speak for them too much, but many like to be transported away from reality. They see reality every day -- so they prefer to escape it. To them, dialogue-heavy, "realistic" film is like watching paint dry. And they might ask, "What the freak is this movie ABOUT?" when trying to watch The Godfather. Different strokes.

reply

LOL I've said "What the freak is this movie about" when watching a number of films! I've said that about 2001:A Space Odyssey and the old film High Noon. And both are undisputed classics. But as you termed it, I like "dialogue heavy" movies. But that's just me. I like a lot of dialogue.

To be transported to a different world away from reality is fun too. I HAVE enjoyed the first two Superman movies and most of the Star Trek movies.

But i haven't found any superhero action films in the last decade or so that has interested me. I think I am heading into "old fogeyhood".

reply

Personally, I don't mind movies and shows depicting supernatural and impossible events. There are a lot of them, but there are also realistic films and shows too. I would suggest checking out more independent and lesser known films, along with classics and older films and foreign language films too.

reply

I enjoy watching movies depicting supernatural and impossible events too. But, it has not become suffocating. It's like that's all there is to watch. I guess you are right I need to look for foreign language movies. I somehow don't seem to enjoy old movies. Probably has to do with the camera quality.

reply

No.

reply

YES! So sick and tired of superheroes, comic book superhumans. Yawn, yawn, yawn.

reply

If you saying there are too many superhero/comic book movies, I will agree with that. I don't watch fantasy either. I do like sci-fi with nasty aliens.
