Do you collect anything?

When I was a kid I used to collect stamps. For several years I've collected rocks. My partner and I used to travel across country and pick up rocks, especially in the southwest. I have lots of obsidian, rhyolite, granite, shale and many others. I also have been collecting sea shells my entire life because I have always lived by the ocean. Lots of fun.

What have you collected?

reply

I used to collect candle holders, and elephant art . I cleaned house a while ago and now I only have a few of each that really mean something to me.

In regards to movies/TV, I collect and read novelisations of my favourite films and shows. I like to see how the author included scenes from the version of the script they had and also added their own dialogue and scenes/backstories.

Sometimes they work really well, sometimes they don't.

Do you collect vintage stereo equipment?

reply

Mostly 70’-90’s turn tables, amps, eq’s, speakers or whatever. I am restoring one of those huge Magnavox Furniture style console systems from the 60’s. The ones you slide the top open and the radio and turntable are inside.

reply

I remember the Magnavox consoles from the old Let's Make a Deal. I remember lusting after Conrad-Johnson and Audio Research amps in the 1990s.

Stereo equipment has been my hobby for over 30 years but I don't collect vintage stuff (no room, and I'm not good at repairing/restoring anything, let alone electronics). I subscribe to both Stereophile and The Absolute Sound. The current state of turntable design is pretty incredible, but due to space constraints I went all digital a number of years ago.

Whenever I want to get a blast from the past I go here, though by no means the only vintage site:

Also here, but they carry newer as well as vintage:

Ah thank you for the links. I’m looking for an affordable pair of Technics 1200 turn tables at the moment. They are great DJ tables but can be pricey.

reply

You may know about audiogon.com kind of like an eBay for audiophiles. Yes I see the Technics 1200 is not cheap.

But there is usually only a smattering of vintage stuff

reply

No I did not know about this site. Good link. 👍
